3 nights in Ghent, Bruges or do both?

We will be stopping in Brussels for 2 nights on our way to Amsterdam and then plan on coming back to Belgium (on our way back to Paris for the flight home). We have 3 nights to plan. We could do an extra night in Amsterdam or do 3 nights in Belgium. We could also add another night to Paris (currently staying there 3 nights at the start of our trip and one night by the airport on the way home). I was thinking of staying in Ghent and doing day trips in the area. Is this too much time in Ghent? We could split the time between Bruges and Ghent but I prefer not to have to switch hotels too often. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Yes to Bruges and Ghent. I'd split it up, but certainly understand why you don't want to keep switching hotels. I'd say 3 nights in Ghent is a bit long, and would probably do 3 nights in Bruges instead; as long as you make sure to visit Ghent at least for one day. It's so charming.

We could do that as well, either city is fine. I just want to ensure we are making the most of our time!

Stay in one, day trip to the other. Either one is a delight to stay in. Personally I prefer the younger, college town vibe of Ghent and would stay there if I went again. I found Bruges just a little to touristy. When I went I stayed in Brussels and day tripped to both Ghent and Bruges.

I spent 3 nights in Ghent with a daytrip to Bruges and it seemed a good amount of time for both for me Many people on this forum have enjoyed more time in Bruges.

We have not stayed in Ghent so can't compare, but I absolutely loved Bruges! I think it's magical. I'm actually going back there in April, with a day trip to Ghent. One thing I did learn is that one weekends return tickets are 50% off from Friday 7pm - Sunday, so the return ticket from Bruges to Ghent is only €9.60.
