My first thought was Ghent (scenic, lively, not all tourists) but I see in Rick Steve's book he only gave it 1 triangle, whereas Bruges got 3 triangles and Brussels 2 triangles.
I will be getting to Belgium via train from Netherlands (probably Rotterdam) and leaving 2 days later on evening/night train from Brussels Midi. I thought I would save Brussels for very last afternoon. Possibly try to see a little of Antwerp on the way in, time/energy allowing. Also to spend time in Bruges and Ghent. I know it's less time than ideal, but it is what it is.
Sending apologies because I know there must be tons of posts like this, but I don't feel like any of these answered my situation.
Also a complication is I might be meeting up with a friend who inexplicably prefers staying in Brussels -- which is contrary to most of the first hand experiences I hear about. Though it wouldn't be too hard to stay near Central Station and visit the other places. The thing is, though, Ghent or even Bruges seems safe to walk alone at night, not as confident in Brussels.
Thanks for any insight.
