Any suggestions for Amsterdam hotels for first time visiting?

If you can afford it, a hotel on the inner canals (western side) would be marvellous. The museum district would also be good. In both cases you can then easily walk to attractions.

However, if you are counting your pennies, I stayed in The Social Hub last December (metro: Wibautstraat). It was an interesting, young, modern hotel with an international clientele, and just a few metro stops from Amsterdam Central Station, or a short walk and a tram ride to the museum district, and the price was right for me. There is also the Volkshotel just across the road, with a similar philosophy. No need to stay in Haarlem.

gigi, you've posted this question in the Forum for posting reviews about hotels and experiences in the country of Belgium.

With your question about Amsterdam you might get better exposure by posting in the Q&A Netherlands Forum as Amsterdam is in the country of the Netherlands. That's at https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/netherlands

I stayed at the Toren hotel. It was in a great location, right around the block from the Anne Frank house. Restaurants nearby.

My daughter and I stayed at the Hotel Estherea and absolutely loved it! Their Instagram page had a promo that included breakfast, so the rate ended up being less than other hotels that I was considering. BTW, their breakfast was excellent! We loved the location, the hotel itself was very nice, and our room was spacious enough with a sitting area. I would definitely stay there again, FWIW.

Based on previous input from the forum folks we have made reservations for our 5 night stay at “The Toren” for late Sept.2026. We’ve had several questions and the staff has responded to everyone in a timely manner. There is also a RS discount availble.
