We’re spending one week in Switzerland and then travelling to Austria.

If you are flying into Zurich then go straight to Lucerne. It's only a 70 minutes train ride from Zurich airport. It's a charming city and hotel prices in Lucerne are a bit less then Zurich.
Lucerne > Innsbruck > Salzburg > Vienna
Fly into Zurich and stay in Lucerne then fly out of Vienna to go home

Don't buy an Eurail or Interrail pass, it is a rip off.
If you book individual tickets well in advance you can get very cheap bargain train tickets.

Zuerich to Innsbruck - 19 Euro at www.oebb.at
Innsbruck to Salzburg - 19 Euro at www.oebb.at
Salzburg to Vienna - 19 Euro at www.oebb.at (or 20 Euro at www.westbahn.at)
Total Cost - 57 Euro
Eurail Pass for Seniors covering Switzerland and Austria - 195 Euro
You can see why no one buys Eurail passes anymore.
Senior discounts are offered by the Westbahn train company mentioned above on the Salzburg to Vienna route, but the advance OeBB fare is still one Euro less. The 19 Euro fares mentioned above need to be purchased online in advance and are for a specific train. Because these are so discounted, there are no additional senior discounts.

This is great information. Thanks for the links too. We’re buying a Swiss pass for a week in Zurich and then we’ll buy these individual ones! Very helpful!
