Zell am See to Fussen

My wife and I will be leaving Zell am See Austria on August 31, and would like to go to Fussen Germany for a couple days before going to Munich, but we will not have a car. Any suggestions for how to do that?

We will be traveling primarily by train, but it looks like the train routes from Zell am See to Fussen go through Munich. We were just wondering if there might be a more direct route by train or otherwise.

the train routes from Zell am See to Fussen go through Munich

The connections having the least number of changes (i.e. 2) go through Augsburg.

The train line to Fuessen terminates there and the tracks are coming from Bavaria (Munich and Augsburg), so that is really the only way to go. A direct line between Zell am See and Fuessen is a spine of mountains.

one route that doesn't go for miles inside germany may not feature in railway planners because it uses buses for part of the ride.

You get a train to Innsbruck Hbf, which may involve a change at Worgl or may be direct. Then you go to Reutte by bus over the Fernpass and then change to another bus to Fuessen.........

Oopss, just noticed you want a Sunday when one of the buses doesn't run!

The rail line between Innsbruck and Mittenwald is under repair and is by replacement bus. As luck would have it, Sunday is the last day that replacement bus service is required. The line will be reopen on Monday, September 1. Even on a Sunday, the rail line from Garmisch-Partenkirchen toward Fuessen stops at Ulrichsbruecke, which is just 3 miles from Fuessen. Normally, there is a bus from Reutte in Tirol, a couple stops before Ulrichsbruecke, but it does not run on Sunday as was pointed out.

Just stick to the easy route via Munich or Augsburg, as it will take less time than by going the "direct" way.

Thanks. We have decided to rent a car in Salzburg to see more of the sights around Zell am See, and return it back in Salzburg where we will catch a train to Fussen (thru Munich)

If you go to www.oebb.at you will see that the route thate keeps in in Austria, involving a bus for the last bit is shown, but I would not use that, as it is complicated.

I would take the direct ICE from Zell to Munich which leaves there at 10:31, and connect with the regional train to Fuessen there. Just one change, and actually the fastest route.

Mountains make for circuitous routes at times....

If you want a rental car, it is cheaper to rent it in Freilassing Germany, a suburb of Salzburg. You could have the car to drive to Fuessen, use it there and then return it in Garmisch and train to Munich.
