Zell Am See Austria

I am finalizing the last few days of my upcoming trip, I am thinking of a day in Zell Am See, since I will be in St. Johann Im Pongau. I have always wanted to ride a gondola to a Mountain top restaurant, with a view. I contacted the Zell Am See tourist board and they sent me list of trams to restaurants. But all of them are 5 star Gourmet restaurants, I am wanting, "Bob's Burger Shack"
Does it exist in this region or is it geared only to the rich?

Also, I am going to take a picnic lunch somewhere , a bottle of Riesling, ham and cheese, what ever I can find in the super market, Drinking in public is acceptable in Austria?

Thanks again for all the information each of you have provided.

When skiing in Europe, I always find cafeteria style restaurants on the mountain tops. The sit-down order from-from-waiter places are generally attached. I find food, even at sit-down restaurants much cheaper than similar places at US ski resorts. The food is better too.

And there is a world of difference between a "Sound of Music" picnic on a mountain meadow with a bottle of wine, and sitting on a park bench in the middle of town sucking muscatel from a brown paper bag.

In 2016 we spent a week in St. Johann im Pongau. It was a wonderful week and there are many day trip possibilities with a car. We went to Zell Am See and while it was nice, we saw other places I preferred. We did a boat trip around the lake. We didn't attempt a picnic such as you describe, so I don't know about public drinking. Enjoy St. Johann!

Drinking in public in Austria is never a problem unless you are under 16. It is exceptionally common to see people walking around with a can of beer in their hand.

We were in Zell am See right before Christmas so no mountainside picnics, but gorgeous in the snow. Good grocery store fairly near the station.
