Your two favorite restaurants, and any number of favorite wine bars in Vienna

Yes, I could research the heck out of it, but we have some very helpful Vienna natives on the fourm and large number of RS tourists who have frequented Vienna. Maybe you can help me narrow it down to a hundred to research. Places close to the ring would be best.

Your top 2 or 3 restaurants please. Any type any cost. There is room for all on my trip.

Thank you for the assistance.

Cafe Frauenhuber on Himmelpfortgasse was excellent--I had tafelspitz and some marvelous stacked crispy potato side dish and still think about it years later.

My other favorite is in the Prater--discovered when I was on my first trip there for all things Third Man, the Zum Englischen Reiter had something called grossmutterschnitzel--schnitzel with peppers and cheese, so good that on every subsequent trip to Vienna I'd do a turn on the Reisenrad and then have this and an enormous beer for lunch. The sign above the door is an enormous hand holding a stelze, which unfortunately is always far too big for someone alone to tackle.

Some people pan it because a lot of tourist eat there, but we've had great food at Figlmüller's. They have two locations, but we are partial to the older one. Can find it on foot, but don't remember the address. Google it and see if it interest you.

Thank you. I am a tourist, I even wear clothes with colors, so it might be a good fit.

We ate at the Palmenhaus which was converted from the imperial greenhouse. The atmosphere is so relaxing and the food really good. There is greenery everywhere. We had our best weiner schnitzel there.
I know you said price doesn’t matter, but for anyone else reading this post, if you go for lunch, before they put on the dinner linens, it is much cheaper.

In a small town called Deutsch-Wagram, right at the border of Vienna, there is a famous restaurant named Marchfelderhof. They offer very good typical Austrian cuisine (including all kinds of [white] asparagus specials during the season [ending mid June]).

The fame of this restaurant is based on its interior design, all the rooms are furnished with a plethora of wacky items, an unbelievable collection of junk and kitsch. But it is worthwhile having seen it at least once and been strolling through all of its rooms. Of course, this has been touristically exploited. All celebrities who come to Vienna will be dragged there. You will find a large collection of their pictures and autographs on the walls, especially along the stairway which leads to the bathrooms.

See here: https://www.marchfelderhof.at/en/

Should you consider going there, you should make a reservation, either online or by calling. The restaurant is easily reachable by public transport. You must take an S1 or REX1 train, running approximately every half an hour. You can board these trains at several train stations - all with subway access - across Vienna, depending on from where do you want to start. At Hauptbahnhof (main train station, U1) the trains depart from (underground) platform #2. But you may hop on as well at Wien-Mitte/Landstraße (U3), Praterstern (U1, U2), Floridsdorf (last stop U6) and Leopoldau (last stop U1). From the train station in Deutsch-Wagram it is a walk of about 5 minutes to the restaurant.

Please note that Deutsch-Wagram is (only) one stop beyond Vienna's border, i.e. where the validity of your public transport passes ends. You are expected to buy an add-on ticket of €2.10 per person per ride.

Barbara, Emily; thank you. Always appreciated.

wmt1; so first I google mapped it.

Good gawd!!!!, its an hour on public with a couple of transfers and a bit of walking, or over a half hour by taxi ... taxi that will probalby set one back 100 euro round trip. I almost entered my response on that much alone.

BUT!!!!! I went to the website. Well wmt1 ................ hmmmmm ................... seriously? ....................................... what a fun looking place and at least in print a pretty nice menu. So, I started to write my response. Then out of curiosity I looked again at the menu, this time the prices.

GOOD GAWD MAN!!!!!, i work for a living (not really, I am retired). Cow cheeks for 30 euro? Seriously? Where I come from they sell cow cheeks in cans or $1.19 ... its called Alpo (okay, I admit I like it. Try a place called Kiadó Kocsma if you ever get to Budapest). Going to a place like this as part of a trip to Vienna is a little like going to Sir Lancelot's in Budapest (okay, i suggest it a lot ... but its a lot cheaper too).

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man it does look like a memorable experience and part of what you pay for is the experience. So for my group of 4, maybe 400 euro including the taxi.

Having said all of that ............ thank you wmt1, this and a place that Emily recommended are two of my go to places on 3 night stay.

Mr. É, no matter what is suggested to you, you always respond with egregious big numbers.

Going to Marchfelderhof by public transport is about half an hour: U1 from Stephansplatz to Leopoldau is 18 minutes, S1 from Leopoldau to Deutsch-Wagram is 8 minutes. If you have a ticket for Vienna already, you need an add-on just for the last stop (€2.10). A lot of people "forget" this to do. There is absolutely no need to go by taxi. I learned that you are familiar with Budapest's public transport, not much difference to Vienna.

The last time I had been in Marchfelderhof my bill was about €55 (beer, main course, wine, dessert, coffee). For Vienna this already in the higher price range; you can get a full meal for under €20 if you go to the places where locals eat. You cannot compare prices in Austria with those in Hungary. But if you compare Austria's restaurant prices with those in Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, England, etc. you will see how reasonable the prices are. (The reason for this is historic. The owner of restaurants make most of their profit from beverages. Therefore Austrians never order tap water, although Vienna's tap water is better than some bottled water.)

We went to this restaurant 2 years ago and plan to go back in August. https://www.griechenbeisl.at/ It was very warm afternoon when we were there before and we ate in the outdoor area. The food was delicious, we split a Schwenshaxe dinner for two. If you go be sure to visit the old Greek Orthodox Church next door.

wmt1 and Mr. E. I just checked out their website site and I would definitely go there for dinner, not matter the costs. Some experiences are worth the $$$.
Also, since you’ll be 4 people, spring for the cab, at least on the way back to your hotel.

Barbara, i you read the last line of my response to wmt1, its on my list and for the reasons you said (which I also noted in my response). As was my thanking wmt1 for the recommendation. You (he) just gotta have a sense of humor. I just changed the trip all around to accommodate it.

But wmt1, Google maps tells me by public transport 53 minutes to 1hour 6 minutes depending on the route, so take it up with Mr. Google. I am not going “the last time” you went, I am going based on the menu prices on the current website and my personal preferences. And it’s a good menu (think I said that too). For all I know you eat bratwurst and pretzels.

But let’s have some fun, so the fixed menu (probably the cheapest way out) plus a little upgrade on the vino will take me to 280 euro for 4. The actual cost on the taxi will be closer to 45 euro round trip. Not bad actually. So, the corrected estimate for dinner for four is 325 euro, not 400 euro. But you know, Ive done this enough to suspect we wont get out for much under 400 euro; if for no other reason most will not want the fixed menu or the house wine. And, again, that’s not bad.

Hmmm, I did make a comparison with a place or two in Budapest, but it was more about the type of place than the local economics. Compared to equal style and quality places the price is pretty comprable to Budapest or my hometown in Texas. Not sure how the owner makes his profit, but if its off beverages he will make a good profit of my group. Gulp Gulp and we may be way over 400 euro for the four of us.

Did you make it to the part where I said it seemed to be everything it should be for what it cost and it was on the list of places to go when I make the trip? Or did you go nutty half way through … I am not going to say that was my intent for you …. And you never got to the I like the idea and I am going. thank you wmt1 part?

To go one step further, wmt1 recommending this place is one of those times when the forum worked at its best. So, again thank you sir.

Mr. É, glad that I could help you. By the way, I did not eat pretzels, but a white asparagus dish. The adjacent area of Marchfeld grows Austria's best asparagus. But the asparagus season ends mid June.

Google Maps is not good for getting advice on public transport, missing Vienna's nitty-gritty details. In and around Vienna to get from A to B it is best to use https://anachb.vor.at/?language=en_GB (set walking distance in the options to 0.5km). Also available as app for mobile phones (VOR AnachB).

That link is much better, it added 1 minute to the fastest travel time and subtracted 1 minute from the longest travel time depending on the route. Drive time remains at 30 minutes. Okay, I exaggerated, it's only 29 minutes.
