Worthersee anyone?

In looking over previous posts on this forum I didn't notice any discussion about Carinthia's Worthersee, which borders Klagenfurth. I vacationed there as a kid for several days years ago, and while it doesn't have any special tourist standout sites, its a lovely warm water lake, also near to Lake Bled in Slovenia. For those who love lakes, plus relatively warm water in summer, its a nice place to keep in mind.

I drove past it once on the Autobahn, and it looked beautiful. There's a nearby rest stop that offers a fantastic view. I had to check it off as a place to visit later, but so far unfortunately, I haven't been back.

It is beautiful. I was on an Alpine Countries tour and, on our way to Villach, we took a short boat cruise on Worthersee (about an hour) and it was gorgeous. There are ferries that travel around the lake stopping at the small towns and villages. Some of the islands in the lake have villas and churches on them, very scenic photogenic place. I'm also surprised that there hasn't been much mention of it on the forum. I think I remember a question about that area of Austria once where it was mentioned but that was some time ago. Definitely worth going to.

I'm also surprised that there hasn't been much mention of it on the forum.

The Prophet has not added it to His Official Blue Book Canon, so it's off the radar to the flock.

But to be a little less insulting, it probably isn't well known because it isn't close to or on the route to some of the more popular Austrian destinations in the English-speaking world (Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt). When was the last time we read a question on this forum about Klagenfurth or Villach? Even after living in a German-speaking environment for several years, I was only vaguely of it's existence until I drove past on the Autobahn.

I know it's not on RS's radar but considering all the questions on here about traveling from Vienna to Venice (whether by train or car), I'm still surprised it has not been mentioned more often. I know Villach has been asked about on here but don't remember Klagenfurt coming up. Too bad. It's a beautiful area and if it's on your way it's a great place to spend a few hours or an overnight.

Klagenfurt, Wörthersee all absolutely beautiful, very untouristed and laid-back. Great idea for someone with extra time in their itinerary.
