Where to Stay Near Vienna

We're beginning to plan a trip to Czech Republic (about 2 weeks) and Austria (about 1 week) for next May. We have already visited Salzburg, Hallstat, St. Wolfgang, and St. Gilgen in Austria. For this trip we're thinking of 4 nights in Vienna. We'd also like to visit Melk Abbey, Durnstein, and Krems and we're thinking of staying 3 nights in one of these towns and visiting the others as day trips. We would rent a car for these days. We're thinking of staying in Krems as it's nearest to Vienna. Has anyone visited these towns? Does this sound like a good idea? Should we stay in a town other than Krems? Is 3 nights enough time to visit these towns? Should we add one night? I should mention that we're in our middle 70s and now prefer slower travel so we can enjoy the individual towns rather than rushing from one place to another. Besides, we can't rush anymore :) We'd appreciate any suggestions or advice. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I’ve been to all of these towns.

Krems is actually a small city. Durnstein and Melk are villages. I would strongly recommend staying in Durnstein, Spitz or Weissenkirchen - the three most scenic villages in the Wachau. As Krems is much larger, it lacks the charm that the Wachau is famous for.

I would add that distance to Vienna from these towns is a non-issue as Krems and Durnstein are hardly 10-15 minutes apart.

Thanks for your information! Spitz looks beautiful and I'll look into it. We have a lot of time and though we have a couple of trips before this one, I like to plan ahead so your help is appreciated. Thanks again.
