Two ideas come to mind. One, on Heldenplatz in front of the Hofburg, by the statue of Archduke Charles. Two, somewhere at Schönbrunn. Perhaps on top of the Gloriette looking towards the city, by the Neptune fountain, or if you prefer something more private, find an isolated nook in the Hofgarten.
Thanks for that advice! Just wondering - what/where is the hofgarten? I can't seem to find anything on google about it..
Thanks!
It may have a different name at Schönbrunn, but I referred to the park grounds behind the palace, leading towards the zoo. Take your pick here, there's plenty of park benches, statues, paths, fountains, etc. The usual stuff that you find on property formerly owned by European royalty.
I'd suggest the Albertina terrace which overlooks the Opera - it is where the famous scene from Before Sunrise was filmed.
Or, on one of the towers overlooking the city at St. Stephans Cathedral.
Or, I also think the Gloriette at Schonbrunn is a good idea.
Or, in one of the Ferris Wheel carriages.
Or, at the Belvedere in front of the famous Kiss painting by Klimt.
Tom as for Heldenplatz, I think many associate that space too closely with Hitler.
Here's some ideas:
In a room at Hotel Am Stephansplatz overlooking St. Stephens.
During a horse & buggy ride.
At one of the famous cafes in a secluded corner.
If classical music or some other type of art is a favorite of hers, you could incorporate that type of event into your evening.
Emily- Really? I didn't realize that any Hitler-related event occurred there. It just seemed like a scenic location in the very heart of the former Hapsburg realm to me.
@Tom: On March 15, 1938, Hitler spoke from the balustraded balcony of the newest part of the Hofburg, the neue Burg, facing the Heldenplatz. Before an estimated 250,000 wildly cheering Viennese, he proclaimed the "homecoming of Austria" into the German Reich (see Third Reich in Ruins). So, I'm with Emily on nixing it for a proposal. @Georgeio: Since it will be in March and the gardens will not be in bloom anywhere, maybe consider an indoor venue, such as the Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly House)/Palmenhaus in the Hofburg, or in a nice café, such as Café Landtmann on the Ringstrasse, or Wien Oberlaa Kurcafe Konditerei in Neuer Markt - our two favorites? Regardless of where you decide to propose, good luck!
Yeah, Tom. It's kind of "THE" Hitler moment in Austria, unfortunately. Every time I walk through there I get the creeps.
As a total Third Man freak, if a man truly wanted to wow me with a proposal it'd be either at the Harry Lime door on Schreyvogelgasse or on the Riesenrad--according to their website you can even have one of the cars to yourselves for a wedding or special meal.
I also really like Emily's suggestion of in front of The Kiss.
@christa: How about in front of Anton Karas' zither in the The Third Man Museum?
About the Heldenplatz my professor in college talked about that spot, said a third of a million jammed the place, even climbed up light posts. I had not seen any documentary footage of that event until my first trip in 1971 when I went to see a German movie, the book of which was almost in every train station book store and display window in Germany, JM Simmel's "Und Jimmy ging zum Regenbogen" In that movie is a documentary clip on Hitler and the masses at the Heldenplatz. When I got to Vienna several weeks later, the first place I went to was the Heldenplatz to check out this place. There is also Russian war footage showing what that place looked like in March 1945 as the Red Army troops and their T-34s moved through it.
I suggest the Gloriette as a site for making the proposal, on top of the Albertina is also very nice.
A little off the beaten path - head up into the Wienerwald and the heurigen there , amidst the woods and the vines overlooking the city
Thanks for all the advice people! I am going to take some time to do some digging and research through all these suggestions.
Cheers!
My daughter and I rode the Riesenrad last June and watched as the couple in front of us in line were boarded into their own cabin-I don't think it was a proposal but they sure looked like they were having a lovely time- private car, dinner, music, candlelight, etc.
The Gloriette is a good suggestion.
You can also go up into the dome of Karlskirche. Great view from there both of the paintings and of the city, not so crowdy as many of the other sites.
Georgeio,
I suggest Belvedere Palace. It has the romantic associations of Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, which is housed there, but I think there is a better spot at the site. I'd suggest that you should propose to her somewhere in the stunning gardens outside. The views are superb. Plus, there is something romantic about a proposal in a garden.
I hope you and your girlfriend have a life of eternal happiness together. Cheers.
