My husband and I have a trip planned this December arriving in Budapest Dec.3, leaving from Munich Dec. 17. We are in Budapest for 4 nights, Vienna 3 nights and Salzburg 3 nights which leaves 4 nights. We have spent quite a bit of time in Munich so only 2 nights there before we leave. That leaves us 2 nights after Saltzburg. We like scenery, the Christmas markets, towns, history (really everything). We will be on train/busses etc. -no car. I have read through the forum and am confused....should we go to Innsbruck, Zell am See, Hall, Fusen??? (We are doing some side trips from Salzburg -- St. Gilgen, Halstatt since we have also spent time in Saltzburg. Would it be wiser to stay in Salzburg the extra days and do additional side trips?) Any suggestions are appreciated.

Howabout adding Graz between Vienna and Salzburg? A bit of a detour, but Graz is underrated in my opinion.

Graz is a very good idea, I second that.
Instead of going to Salzburg directly from Graz, you could go to Hallstatt first, stay a few hours, and continue to Salzburg.

I would add another night in Budapest and Vienna.or at least a night in Gyor on the way to Vienna. Maybe plan some day trips and overnight trips out of Vienna and Budapest and to do that add several days to each. Budapest overnights would be Eger and Pecs. Day trips Szentendre and Székesfehérvár.

If I understand correctly you have been to Salzburg and Munich before. So, these arent the highlights of the trip. You are using Salzburg in the Winter as a base for side trips that will require 4 to 5 hours of round trip transportation time?
I would choose Graz or Hallstatt and do one for two nights on the way to Salzburg from Vienna. I might skip Salzburg and go straight to Munich for 2 nights. The nights you save this way I would, again, spend in Vienna and Budapest (new places for you).
