My wife and I are looking for good places to eat in Salzburg. We visit the city every two or three years and are planning our next trip for later this year. Mid priced eateries with menus that are not way out there for the typical American traveler. Anything from pizza to fine dining, beautiful views would be a plus. Our hotel is across the river from Old Town but we aren't limited to that area as a taxi ride is always available.
Thanks,
Kelly
We enjoyed the "Old Fox", Gasthof Alter Fuchs on Linzergasse across from altstadt.

Good and plenty Austrian food and drink with a lively atmosphere and a reasonable price.
We ran into the two other American groups that we knew to be in Salzburg who all independently picked the Old Fox, and all gave it a high rating. The next night we were seated at the same Mozart dinner concert table as another American couple who enjoyed the Old Fox the previous night. This is not to say that the Alter Fuchs was filled with Americans, but we all enjoyed the dining experience.
"Anything from pizza to fine dining, beautiful views would be a plus." Ah, that would be the outdoor café at Hohensalzburg. The view isn't of the (relatively small) Altstadt of Salzburg, but towards the magnificent Alps of Salzburgerland and SE Bavaria. I don't even remember the food, the view was that impressive.
The Gasthof Alter Fuchs is on the ground floor, almost basement, so the views are limited to foot traffic if you have a window table.
If views are the decision driver, our Panasonic SOM tour guide strongly suggest a drink (or meal) on the Stein Hotel's roof top. Its located across from old town next to the old town bridge. (We didn't have time to check it out in person and January wasn't roof top eating season). http://steinterrasse.at/content-en.html
No views, but the meal we had at Zirkelwirt was delicious. It is tucked away in a quiet square - Papagenoplatz. The food was traditional Austrian with some "extras", such as a delicious Greek salad. Portion sizes were generous and prices were very reasonable. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g190434-d2260512-Reviews-Zirkelwirt-Austrian_Alps.html
We had dinner in an upstairs dining room at the Zum Eulenspiegel on Hagenauerplatz and found the food and surroundings to be very nice. A day later my cousin in Vienna recommended it b
very highly as a place to stop on our way back to Switzerland.
Thank you for all your suggestions. So far we haven't eaten at any of the places recommended. Keep them coming as we usually spend about 10 days in Salzburg. Any good bakeries? Kelly
My family and I are major history buffs, so we had to eat at the St. Peter Stiftskeller, founded 803. Charlemagne is reputed to have eaten there. I just looked on TripAdvisor and the food gets quite mixed reviews; I remember enjoying our food, but it was 8 years ago and the lovely courtyard and history were the most memorable for me.
We had a lovely meal at Saran Essbar in the old town. No view, but it was a cosy atmosphere on a rainy evening.
