Westbahn trains to Vienna from Salzburg

Hello, my parents and I will be traveling from Salzburg to Vienna by train on December 7th. We'll be staying in an apartment near St.Aegyd Catholic Church. I wasn't sure if it was best to arrive at Westbaunhof or the main Vienna train station considering the location of our apartment. Also, with the our travel date being during the holiday season, is best to get a reservation? I understand that Westbaun train tickets can be purchased on the train for about 26 euro and run every hour whereas railjet tickets into Vienna main station are around 53 euro right now. I'm sure either way we could make it work but any suggestions or thoughts y'all have would be very much appreciated since this is my first time to travel in Austria in quite some time.

St Aegyd is between the Westbahnhof and the Hauptbahnhof and closer to the Westbahnhof. Thursday Dec 7 should be just a normal weekday.

Actually, Dec. 8 is an Austrian national holiday, so I expect Dec. 7 rail traffic to be busy as people will want to take advantage of a long weekend. I suggest making a reservation on Westbahn to make sure you have a place to sit. Standing is no fun.

If your parents are over 60, they can also get an Activ ticket for 19 Euro from Westbahn. These tickets, as well as the reservations, should be bought from any Tabak in Salzburg. Tabaks are everywhere.

As for your apartment location, you will be much closer to Westbahnhof than Hauptbahnhof. Nearly walking distance.

Finally, 19 Euro tickets from OeBB are also possible if booked in advance, online. The price you quote is the fully flexible, walk up fare which no one ever uses.

I guess you are referring to "Pfarrkirche Gumpendorf" in the 6th borough. There are three churches in Vienna worshipped to Saint Aegidius.

Cheapest RailJet tickets (as of now) are €24 (Sparschiene bargain), but they are bound to a specific train.

As December 8th is a public holiday in Austria, December 7th is like a Friday before a long weekend. If you want to have a seat reservaition - which I always recommend - you should book in time.

It does not make a big difference whether you go by RailJet or Westbahn regarding reaching your accommodation. If you go by RailJet you should alight at Wien Meidling, that is one stop before Wien Haupbahnhof (main station).

Both from Wien Westbahnhof or Wien Meidling you must take the U6 subway (metro) to "Gumpendorfer Strasse", and continue downtown using bus 57A. The ride is about 10 minutes in the first case and 15 minutes in the latter.

The taxi fare should be less than €10 in either case.

Walking from Wien Westbahnhof to your accommodation is about .75 miles.
Walking from Wien Meidling or Wien Hauptbahnhof is not reasonable.

Thank you all for the helpful feedback! Looks like it will be best to arrive at Westbahnhof and reserve seats, Thanks again!
