We have read these caves are spectacular. We are thinking about driving from Salzburg on a day trip. Has anyone been to the caves? Can we drive and buy tickets when we arrive? Thank you for any tips.
Never been there, but found this on the Net:

Looks to be about an hour drive from Salzburg.
Yes, you can just buy tickets there. Note that there are many stairs inside the cave, described on the web site. I visited many years ago and am pretty sure I enjoyed it (but also had been ill right before, so I should not have attempted so many stairs at that time).
Thank you very much. It is hard at times to determine what is best in advance. Your advice is appreciated
My husband I visited as a day trip from Salzburg. It was awesome. Definitely worth it. We booked it through a tour operator (cannot remember the name) but we were very happy with it. Wear good shoes - there is a fair amount of walking to the entrance of the caves and lots of steps in the caves. And, we had the best apple strudel on the way down (if you are into that kind of thing, which we are;)).
Sounds great. Thanks
I've been twice and if I get to Salzburg again I'd do it again. Dress warmly - I was cycling the first time and didn't have warm clothes with me!
