Walking tours of Salzburg and Vienna

My wife and I will be visiting both Salzburg and Vienna at the end of May 2019. We plan 3-4 nights in each city. Does anyone have good experiences/recommendations for historic walking tours in these cities? We enjoy "getting the lay of the land" the first day we are in a new place, and have had enjoyable and informative walks in other European cities. Are private tours worth the added expense? Any information is appreciated, thanks.

Rick's guidebooks have good recommendations for walking tours of those places, with lots more detail than we can provide here.

Besides Rick’s audio Europe walking tours, check out Global Greeters. They are active in Vienna, but not Salzburg. Free walking tours with a local who enjoys sharing his/her city with visitors. Must register at least two weeks in advance. Can customize your tour within limits — I chose to see interesting sites not commonly seen by tourists.

We always go online and see if there are any "Free Walking Tours" of the cities we're visiting. The tour guides are fully licensed and work for tips. We've never been disappointed.
They also have nightlife or pub crawl tours at night where they do charge. We always go beck on our first night as they'll take you to the really good restaurants and local bars off the beaten path. The people that go back for the nightlife tours are of all ages and are from all over the world. It's a great time.
Whenever I'm in Salzburg, I always end up at the Augustiner Brewery. It's one of the great authentic beer halls.
