Wachau Valley, day trip from Vienna

Hi,

Two part question about visiting the Wachua Valley. Two of us will be in Vienna in two weeks. We would like to see the Melk Abbey and take the short cruise on the Danube. Since that means a whole day out of Vienna, we want to make the most of it. Unfortunately, no biking due to a shoulder injury.

Has anyone recently done this with a tour service? I've seen tours with Viatour, Vienna City Tours, Vienna Explorer. We're thinking a tour would be easier/more efficient than hobbling the day together on our own.

Steves mentions stops at Willendorf, Dürnstein, and Krems. We are interested in history but not shopping. The three together with the abbey and cruise seems ambitious for a day trip.

Any opinions or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

We took the "Hidden Wachau Valley" tour with Vienna Explorer in 2015 and couldn't have been more pleased. When we took the tour, we did a Melk Abbey tour instead of the Danube Cruise, due to the season. We also visted Durnstein and Krems, and a couple of other places whose names have escaped me. We ate lunch (at our own expense) at a very unique restaurant, with even better wine than what we tasted at the wine tasting stops.

It was all in all a very good day.

I did this as a day trip on my own by getting the OBB special combi-ticket (this was 2014, costs 55 euros now) that covered the train ride from Vienna to Melk and a guided tour of the Abbey, then I had time to have a great lunch in a restaurant and explore the little town before catching the boat for the river portion--it stopped at Durnstein and Krems and if I wasn't having an awful blistered foot kind of day I would have exited and explored Durnstein but I caught the train back to Vienna from Krems. There's a schedule so you can plan accordingly, stay longer in one place if it appeals. It was definitely enjoyable, however you accomplish it you won't be sorry you did.
