Visiting Zugspitze from Innsbruck

Hi,

I am planning to visit Zugspitze from Innsbruck. Confused about the travel options- I am unable to find any public transport for the same. Also the official site for Zugspitze says the cog wheel train will be closed till 9th June and the cable car will switch to Summer mode from 30th May, what exactly does this mean? I am planning to visit on 29th May.

Thank you. Replacement bus service means we will still be able to reach the top correct? And service from Innsbruck is by bus or train? Do I need to book it beforehand?

There are direct regional train connections between Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Seefeld in Tirol, Austria. They take approximately one hour twenty minutes and cost 16,40€ per adult. They run every two hours. There are a few additional connections between the direct connections. They take almost two hours with a change in Seefeld.

Find the schedules on the Bahn website.

It is rail service taking 1 hour and 19 minutes. No need to book in advance. It is a regional train, always the same price.

The summit of Zugspitze marks the border between Austria and Germany, so the mountain is shared between both countries.
Consequently there are two cable cars running to the top, one from the Austrian side, one from the German side.

The Austrian cable car departs from Ehrwald, the German cable car departs from Eibsee.

Unfortunately Ehrwald has no good public transport connection, so it is easier to go from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany (direct trains every two hours), and from there with the cog wheel train to Eibsee.

Personally, I'd combine both. Take the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn from Garmisch (if the cog raiway is closed change to the cable car in Eibsee) and the Austrian cable car down to Ehrwald. The bonus is that you will then take the nice train ride back to Garmisch on the Außerfernbahn. There is a bus transfer from the valley station to the train station in Ehrwald.
