I'll be visiting Europe next September and I'm thinking about traveling to Austria and on to Munich after Rome. What type of fast travel options (if any) are available from Rome to Salzburg? Also you suggest some reasonably priced places to stay in Salzburg? The Von Trapp Sound of Music tour is on my bucket list.

A flight to Munich will probably be the fastest option. Salzburg has a smaller airport so not as many flight options, but I haven't checked on flights from Rome. You could travel by train on that route, but that will be about a 9.5 hour trip with 2-3 changes.
In order to suggest "reasonably priced places to stay in Salzburg", it would help to have some idea what you consider "reasonable" and also what comfort level you want. I spent several nights at Krone 1512 hotel in September and was pleased with the accommodations. The room was a basic single but it was clean and comfortable, and the hotel is in a great location.
Air Dolomiti is a budget airline that flies between Munich and Italy (it's a Lufthansa subsidiary and quite good). I flew Florence-Munich with them and was very happy with the service and price.
