Visiting Obersalzberg Documentation Center & salt mine

I will be in Salzburg for 3 days the first week of December. I would like to see the Obersalzberg Documentation Center and Bunker and perhaps the salt mines in Berchtesgaden. My thought was to take an early morning bus #840 from Salzberg to Berchtesgaden, then take the #838 bus from Berchtesgaden to the Documentation Center. I believe the Center opens at 10:00 am. After touring the Documentation Center, I thought it would be possible to visit the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine. From the Documentation Center I could take the #838 bus back toward Berchtesgaden or walk to the mine. The mine is open until 4:00 pm. Is this possible to do in one day? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I can't fully answer your question, but when we went to the Documentation Center and bunkers, we left Salzburg around noon and got back around 5:30 or so, taking the buses you describe. Adding in the Salt Mine might be doable if you got an earlier start than we did.

Thank you Dawn for your reply. It is very helpful to know what I've been reading in the tour book might actually work!
Do you mind sharing what other things you did while in Salzburg? I was thinking of taking a mountain/lakes tour another day, but don't know if it would be better to rent a car for a day. Any thoughts?

We didn't do any mountain or lake tour, and also didn't rent a car. We like taking public transportation everywhere. If you like the Sound of Music, this forum has good things to say about Bob's Sound of Music tour (just enter "sound of music" in the search box above and look at recent reviews). From what I understand, some of the tours also take you around the lakes and mountains as well.

We enjoyed touring the Hohensalzburg Fortress, walking along Monchsberg, and taking in the Mirabell Gardens. Rick's walking tour in the guide book is also very good and thorough. The Augustiner Brewery was definitely a highlight - great beer and people watching!!

Have a great trip. You will love Salzburg.
