My friends and I will be in Vienna during the Wine and Hiking Festival at the end of September. I am interested in any information that can be shared with me. I know there are 4 routes that can be chosen but I really need to know how to access the areas by public transportation, if tickets are bought ahead of time, favorite route and any other information. Thanks so much!

Is wise to wine while you hike in the mountains?
Only problem is the wine wants to slosh out of the glass!
It's only fair that the wine get as sloshed as I do.
"Mountains" is an euphemism for Vienna's hills.
Thanks everyone! There are some fun answers to my question! Anyone have a favorite route out of the 4? I'm guessing that tickets are not needed as I didn't see any information on that. What would be the easiest one to access using public transportation?
If you download the maps available using the link given above, you will see that all hikes have access to public transport on either end, marked with a red dot.
I have done all of these hikes and this event is a highlight for me every year.
The classic route is #1, Neustift to Nussdorf. For a first timer, that is the one you should do. Lots of stalls, lots of views and lots of vineyards. My second choice would be #4, Mauer. This is a new route which I did last year and it felt like I was in the countryside. Third choice would be #2, which is across the Danube and fourth choice would be #3, the shortest route. Expect crowds and lines as this is a popular event. Expect to have a lot of fun.
The red dots (Haltestelle Öffis) indicates on the map where there is access to public transportation. For #1, I suggest that you take Tram D to the end, which is the starting point of this route. There will be signs and flags everywhere. When you finish, the route drops you at the bus stop of 35a, which you can easily take to Spittelau, where you can get on the U4 subway line to wherever you need to go.
This is a free event - there are no tickets.
One last question and thank you Emily for your reply, it really helps to know about the public transportation as I live in a small town where it is not readily available and I don't have a opportunity to use it often.
Is the event a mix of local Austrian people and tourists? Even though we are tourists we would like to spend time with locals while in Austria.
Thanks to all that replied to my questions.
It’s all locals.
