Vienna - Turkish Restaurants?

No, it's not a typo and I am not James mixing up my countries.

There are nice Turkish restaurants in Munich so i assume there are nice ones in Vienna too. Any recommendations? I should say I am not looking for Doener. Love lamb chops dinners in Turkish restaurants.

Thanks,

Gerry

There was one on Mariahilferstrasse (near Museum Quarter) -- it was open on Sunday, rare for Vienna, and we were hungry and it was good.

Levante was a good one. On Wallnerstrasse in the city center, though I think the have one on Mariahilferstrasse as well.

I must first correct the impression above - it is in fact completely normal (not rare!) for restaurants to be open on Sundays in Vienna. It is the shops that are closed on Sundays.

Now getting to the main question - I have two suggestions.

  1. Kent - This is a very popular Turkish restaurant in three locations, but please go to the one at Brunnengasse, located in a cool market area. http://www.kentrestaurant.at/kent16/#/kontakt/

  2. If you want an authentic, grandma in the back kind of experience, then go to the unnamed place across from Rainer's Hotel in the 10th District. I don't know the exact address for the restaurant/cafeteria, but the hotel is Gudrunstrasse 184. The Turkish place is right across the street. The food is served cafeteria style, so you can see what you are getting. Best to go here for lunch, Monday-Thursday.

Gyros Café, Seilerstatte 19, Vienna 1010, Austria. Very friendly owner and wait staff. Not fancy, just basic Mediterranean food. Ate there in May 2013. It was listed in the RS Vienna guide. Near Haus der Musik.

Thanks for the great tips. Off tomorrow. Very excited. Got enough stuff to check out / eat that it would take me 10 visits to do it justice!

Gyros Cafe (Greek, not Turkish!) is closed for the Christmas holidays. Walked past it this afternoon and saw the sign in the window announcing the closure.

He's already over there Emily so most-likely he'll find out on his own now. Hope he enjoys himself in Vienna! Wish we were back for Christmas ourselves. (Thor especially).
