Vienna Transit Pass valid for visit to Schonnbrunn Palace?

Hi:

We'll be in Vienna in a few weeks & plan to buy the 72 hour transit pass. Will this pass be good for a visit to Schonnbrunn Palace? This site I'm looking at says the transit pass is good in Vienna's core zone. Is Schonnbrunn Palace considered to be inside the "core zone"?

Thanks!

It is covered by the pass . The U4 metro ( U Bahn ,in German ) takes you there

You can catch a tram that stops outside Schonnbrunn. It's maybe a quarter mile walk to the palace. The yards of such incredible places are large. Come to think of it, the back yard is even more incredible with the big hill you can climb to get an overview of the backside of the palace.

I think we got on mass transit at the train station--and went west maybe 3 miles.

Hi Suki:

I've allotted a full day for the Schonnbrunn Palace sites. We're planning to see some of the gardens & hopefully the Zoo too. Unless it's so hot we have to give in! :)

All Vienna transit passes are valid for the whole area of the State of Vienna, good for any means of public transport (tram, subway, bus, train).

The calendar week pass (valid from Monday to Sunday) has the same price as the 72-hours pass. It is the most preferable pass, unless your stay crosses the week boundary, i.e. the night from Sunday to Monday. (In Europe Monday is considered to be the first day of the week.)

An advice from locals for visiting Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens:

Most visitors arrive at the main gate, do their tour, and then walk up the steep hill to the Gloriette, which is on the very top. It is much less strenuous to do it the other way round. Enter the premises via the Maria Theresia Tor (south-east garden entrance), already being at the hill top, walk comfortably to the Gloriette. Climb up to its roof terrace for a wonderful view. After that have a coffe and a cake in the café. Then stroll downhill to the palace's main building.

It is rather simple to get to the Maria Theresia Tor (Tor = gate) by public transport. At Meidling Bhf. (Meidling train station) bus 8A departs, ride until stop Stranitzkygasse, then just walk straight over the bridge into the gardens. Meidling Bhf. is a major public transport hub, reachable from all parts of Vienna, most notably by subway U6, several S-trains (Schnellbahn), tram 62, WLB (Badner Bahn). What would be the best choice will depend from where you will be coming from.

Unless it's so hot we have to give in! :)

You can cool down by visiting the Carriage Museum on the premises of the palace. It has a good A/C to protect the exhibits.

Thanks, wmt1!

We will arrive early on a Thursday morning (I hope!) and have until late Sunday afternoon when we leave by train to Salzburg, so that weekly pass will work for us. I was planning to buy the 72 hr for Fri, Sat & Sun, but I will buy the weekly pass in case we want to use public transport on Thursday.

Thank you for the tips on Schonnbrunn! I like the idea of starting at the Gloriette & heading down. I will print your info & take it with us.
