Two years ago I bought a 24 hour ticket online for the Vienna tram. I printed out the ticket, then when the day came, I just got on the tram without validating it. Was that the correct way too do it? Because I'm going again in a month, and I want to do it again, but I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. I was under the impression that if you have a printed out ticket with the exact date and time on it, you don't have to validate it on the tram.
If you buy it online it will already have a date and a time on it, which is when it is valid for.
The purpose of validation is to put a timestamp on the ticket to stop you using it for more than 24 hours. Totally pointless on an online ticket as you can print out as many copies as you like. That is why all online tickets have to have date and time on them already.
That's what I thought. Thank you for verifying.
No need to buy it online . you can easily buy a day pass at any machine automat , validate it once , all done .

Be careful, there are different types of vending machines. Some provide you with a blank ticket which must be validated on the first ride, some give you a ticket with a preprinted starting time, i.e. the time when the ticket was bought.
A 24-hour Vienna transportation ticket is valid not just for trams. It can be used on any mode of transportation.
As additionally noted, it is unnecessary to purchase this pass online and print it out. Buy the ticket from a machine or from the WienMobil app.
I was just in Vienna and bought my ticket at a tobacco shop. In fact, my hotel was across the street from the main train station and I bought our ticket at the tobacco shop inside the station. Then you just validate once and you’re good to go but just make sure you hang on to the ticket in case an inspector asks for one.
