Vienna to Mauthausen

Hi,

I was just wondering if there was a rail option to get from Vienna to Mauthausen Concentration Camp? I did see a forum post but not from Vienna.

I have already booked a tour for $270 per person but I think I get a train/bus there a lot cheaper. We are going to go 30 December 2025 and from what I have read it is free entry?

Any help would be great.

This is a ticket reseller which fleeces gullible tourists. Always book your tickets directly from the train operators.

From Wien to Mauthausen OÖ Bahnhof

The best connection is ICE 28 to Linz and then REX 33 to Mauthausen (a ride of 1:45 hours).
Confirmed departure times cannot be given at the moment, because the current train schedule ends on December 13th, 2025.

From the train station to the Memorial it is best to take a taxi. (The bus directly to the Memorial runs only during the summer season.)

I'm at Linz Hbf every trip in Europe as Linz Hbf. is on the night train line from Paris and also from Berlin, very convenient.

This summer I saw the bus #36 with its terminus: " Mauthausen " stopping at Linz Hbf.

If this is the bus referred to above, then you won't have this option in Dec. The taxi is then your best and practical option from Linz Hbf.

I disagree. Going 15 miles by taxi is somewhat expensive.

Trains and busses (360 and 361) from Linz to Mauthausen run all year, but the don't stop right at the memorial. So you need a taxi just from Mauthausen town or train station to get to the memorial in winter.

During the summer season bus 362 runs from Linz directly to the memorial.

See my previous post above.

Take the taxi or bus 36 from Linz Hbf. One has that choice.

There is NO bus line 36 in Linz.

Maybe I didn't see the 3rd digit. Unless my eyes deceived me, I saw the bus # 36 swing by in Linz Hbf more than once. That bus had Mauthausen as its terminus. I was standing outside where the taxi stand is, not waiting for a taxi, of course. This was in June 2025

The OP can there too and see if a bus with Mauthausen as the terminus but I could have missed the 3rd digit.
