Vienna to Lake Bled

Hi everyone,

My wife and I will be attending a wedding near Lake Bled in July. We have flights into and out of Vienna. In total the trip will last 6 nights. We are deciding between taking trains or to rent a car. We have each been to Vienna before, we love the city, but would prefer to spend most of our time seeing other parts of Austria or Slovenia. We are interested in doing some light hiking on the trip as well, all during the day (not camping, just taking trails for a few hours where possible). Along the way Graz and Maribor look to be fine places to spend a night coming or going to Slovenia.

I welcome any thoughts about mode of transport for the week, itinerary, or any suggestions for short hikes in the region.

It isn't a terribly long drive from Vienna to Bled. If you like light hiking, then I suggest getting yourself to Lake Bohinj and basing yourself there for a few days. Fantastic hiking here. Maybe a couple of days in Ljubljana, visiting Piran and the caves as well. Maribor is ok, but check out Ptuj instead. Graz is ok, interesting town, but nothing spectacular. I really like visiting the Zotter Chocolate Factory and Riegersburg Fortress, which is nearby to Graz and a much prettier area to base.
