We are going to Halstatt after our stay in Vienna. We note that there are several train carriers, what would be the best method to use to get to Halstatt?
You are probably seeing resellers.
The Austrian rail site is ÖBB:
https://www.oebb.at/en/
When searching on the OeBB website, enter Wien for departure and Hallstatt Bahnhst as destination. If no connection can be found, make sure that Direct trips only is unchecked.
Note that due to track repairs trains will be replaced by buses between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl / Hallstatt ending September 10, 2023.
There is only one train carrier for this route - OeBB. Do not buy from anywhere else!
Roy,
You may already be aware of this, but if you arrive in Hallstatt via rail, you'll have to make a trip across the lake in Stefanie to reach the town. It's a very easy process, as the boats are frequent so you won't have to wait long. There's a small charge for the boat. I can't remember the exact amount but it's only a few Euro.
The trip will be as short as 3H:16M, with one change at Attnang-Pucheim. Some trains have two changes. Time will vary depending on which departure you choose. As a previous reply mentioned, there could be railway maintenance taking place, which will involve a short bus ride.
