Hello planning on seeing family in Vienna Austria and also Calabria Italy possibly September (2017). Any ideas other than flying directly from Vienna to Calabria or is opposite way better? seems about $ 500 airfare
Fly to Rome? Then train? We don't have that many days to travel so hoping to get there quickly. Direct train is about 15 hours
Any thoughts?

I don't think that there is an alternative to going by plane from Vienna to Calabria.
I did a short check on air fares without going into details (one-way, without checked-in luggage):
VIE - FCO about € 60 (Vienna to Rome)
FCO - CAT about € 35 (Rome to Catania)
There are other airports in the Calabria region as well, you must check that.

That is correct. It was meant as an alternative to Reggio di Calabria. You can easily go from Catania to Messina, where you have the ferry (40 minutes) to Reggio. For an unknown reason flights to Reggio di Calabria are much more expensive.
Another alternative is Lamezia Terme.
FCO - SUF about € 50 (Rome to Lamezia Terme)
FCO - REG about € 145 (Rome to Reggio di Calabria)
It depends on where you want to go in Calabria.
