We are considering attending an opera at the Vienna State Opera in early November. The show we are looking at (on the official website) is currently only available as presale. Do the tickets only roll out a certain number of days/months in advance? Can anyone lend any estimates on when early November shows will be available? Im hesitant to proceed with presale as it required prepayment without seat selection or even the show time listed.
Price range for tickets is 15-220€. We are looking for something midrange, can anyone share any seat selection tips for a group of 4? Category 4 is 100€ (which is 24€ more than category 5 and 40€ less than category 3). Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Ticket sales for November start on September 1st, 10am (local time). Maybe it is worth to get up early on this day. :-)
I am not an opera aficionado, but I would buy tickets category 5 or 6 on "Balkon" or "Galerie", not too far on the side. If tickets are available in boxes ("Loge"), never buy tickets in the 3rd row, and 2nd row tickets only in boxes 11, 12, or 13.
Wow!
Thanks for the incredibly helpful and swift response! I will definitely set my alarm on 1 September!
Tickets can sell fast. I like the boxes, but only up front as it can be hard to see the stage from behind. The interior of the Opera House is fantastic.
I am interested in tickets for the Musicverein and wrote to them. They put me on an email list to be notified when the tickets go on sale to the public. It is very helpful. Perhaps the Opera has something similar.
Good luck.

Ticket sales for the Staatsoper in Vienna follow a regular schedule, i.e. always two months in advance.
Ticket sales for November start on September 1st, 10am (local time), for December on October 1st, for January on November 1st, and so on.
wmt1- I have my alarm set and seating chart printed out! Just one more clarification question...for the Loge, is it worth considering 1st or 2nd row in boxes 1-10, or are those too far on the sides? Thanks again for sharing your advice, it's been super helpful!
@Kate
The view from a 2nd row seat in a "Loge" can be limited. It does not depend only on the position of the "Loge", but also on who is sitting in front of you. From the first row you always have a view of the stage, but you have to look more and more sideways the lower the number of the "Loge" is.
I wish you good luck when ordering your tickets. Please share your experience in this forum.
”is it worth considering 1st or 2nd row in boxes 1-10…?”
We attended a wonderful ballet at Wiener Staatsoper and sat in the box seats. I would agree; choose only the first row in the single digit boxes. And try to go with the option of a higher number than 4. We were fairly close, and my husband was sitting next to me with my seat closest to the stage - both front row seats. Even then, we were both looking towards the front from an angle.
Success!
I'm so grateful for the advice to buy the tickets at 10am local time (4am for me!). After reading all of your advice and studying the seat map yesterday, I had my heart set on loge seating, and I got it!
Finding 4 seats together that were not either the absolute highest or lowest price category was no easy task- apparently this show had a strong presale. I was able to secure three front row seats (category 2) and one second row seat (category 7) in loge 8. My husband is happy to take the 2nd row seat, and hopefully with the rest of our family in the front row, he will still end up with a decent view.
For the sake of future readers searching this topic I would like to pass along two things I learned. 1) Once a show is open for ticketing, if you start the ticket buying process and click on an available seat, look to the right and click on the red link that says "Seat preview" to get an idea of what the view is like for this particular seat. Not all seats have this option, but many do. Yesterday, I simply clicked on an October performance of the same show we booked for November and investigated the views from various seats. 2) If you happen to be traveling with children under 16, some performances offer 15€ tickets for children. When you click on the seat, you will be given the option of standard ticket or Kinderkarte. My son is 15 years old, so this brought one of our tickets down from 175€ to 15€! With such a significant savings, I was able to "upgrade" ourselves to front row loge seats and stay within my total target price range of about 400€ for the four of us.
Thanks again for all of the advice and tips, I truly appreciate it!
