Vienna > Wolfgangsee > Salzburg > Munich Itinerary

We have tickets booked to arrive in Vienna on May 20 at 12:30 and we leave from Munich on June 2 at 11:50. This allows us 13 nights and our initial thought is to divide our time as follows: Vienna (5), Salzburg (2), and Munich (5). This still leaves us with one night to play with. We can either add it to our current plan or pick another destination and reallocate our nights. I would like to hear your suggestions on how we should arrange the nights.

We are planning a daytrip to Bratislava from Vienna. We plan to use trains and buses but would not rule out renting a car for a few days if it makes sense to visit an area that is not well served by public transportation. We will then start to look for accommodations when the destinations are finalized, hopefully apartments.

Thanks

Thanks Ilja.

Hallstat looks like a nice break from cities. Do you recommend Vienna (5) > Hallstat (1) > Salzburg (2) > Munich (5)?

We are planning a similar itinerary in September. "...hopefully apartments.....": We had good luck with AirBB, finding its search functions to be more user-friendly than our long-time stand-by, VRBO. (Select "whole house" to eliminate rooms in otherwise occupied homes.) Don't wait too long to shop for lodging once you've finalized dates/locations. You could add 1 day to Salzburg and use it for a day-trip to: (i) Bertschgaden and Hitler's "Eagles Nest"; or (ii) one of the many villages in the nearby Salzkammergut without having to pack/checkout/checkin/unpack again.) I believe bus tours from Salzburg will be available for most of those options. Lots of info in the RS book on Vienna and Austria.

Thanks rca, the paperback guidebook is sold out. I am hesitant to use the Kindle edition but my options are limited.

I hear you about the Kindle. Could be my age and deficient tech skills, but I've been frustrated when attempting to search/navigate the RS books on Kindle. Maybe try your library? Ours in Florida carries the popular RS destination books, and the duration is 3 weeks before return or renewal is due.

Good advice for the library, I now have a 2011 copy for some general planning and will pick up the new copy when available and if recommended.

This is version 2 of our itinerary:

  1. May 20: land in Vienna around 12:30
  2. May 21: Vienna, maybe a show or concert
  3. May 22: Vienna
  4. May 23: Vienna with a daytrip to Melk or Bratislavia (undecided here)
  5. May 24: pick up a rental car and head towards Wolfgangsee Lake area, stay in St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgin (possibly Melk or Linz, this would decide destination for previous day)
  6. May 25: visit Hallstat, stay in St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgin
  7. May 26: head to Salzburg and drop off car
  8. May 27: Salzburg
  9. May 28: train to Munich
  10. May 29: Munich
  11. May 30: Munich
  12. May 31: daytrip to Dachau
  13. June 1: Munich
  14. June 2: flight home at 11:50

Does this itinerary look reasonable and will it work?

Thanks

Looks good!

Melk is well along on the way to the Salzkammergut. You should visit on the day you start driving west.

I'd do 3 nights in Munich, not 5. Then I'd keep the car for two more days and explore a little in Austria along the way to Salzburg, maybe drive over to Alto Adige or spend a couple of nights in the Dolomite - every single person I know who's been raves about the incomparable beauty. Munich is a fine city though!

Smart to drop the car in Salzburg - so much cheaper than dropping it in Germany.
