Vienna-Salzburg (Hallstatt) - Budapest trip itinerary

Traveling 2 adults & teens. Trying to plan a summer trip & Is this city trip combination doable? Any suggestions for “must dos” or more importantly do not do. Definitely a sound of music tour. Looking for great food choices too. Would you add another city? Best city to fly into ?

First questions is when? And then for how long?

If only those 3 places, use a multicity ticket to fly into Munich, then train to Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest. Fly home from Budapest

April 15 to 15 October

Minimum 2 nights Munich, 3 nights Salzburg (I added one because of the sound of music tour), 2 nights Hallstatt, 4 nights Vienna,4 nights Budapest.

So, in theory you could do this leaving the US on a Saturday and returning on a Sunday two weeks later. And 4 more nights would make it a better trip. Does that work for you?

Agree with the responses so far. I do suggest that you tentatively plan your days for each city before you book hotels and or trains. You may find that you have one day too many or too few in a location. If you can add a day for Munich, do so.

In Salzburg, visit the Stiegel Brewery for dinner, located adjacent to the funicular to the Castle. Great beer and excellent food. The Augustiner beer hall is also a popular spot for OK food, great beer and a fantastic beer garden experience.

Regarding Vienna, there have been some relatively recent foodie posts. Go find them and please enjoy the coffee, pastries and schnitzel (have the veal--worth the extra cost).

Forgot to ask...how old are your teens? Drinking age for beer and wine in Austria is 16. Are you prepared for that?
