Vienna restaurant

Hello there. Any good restaurant suggestions in Vienna? I was hoping to get a table at figlmueller but they are fully booked. Any other good restaurant that is worth a visit?

We also had a challenge getting a table there a few weeks ago. Our hotel concierge recommended Lugeck (owned by Figlmueller) just around the corner. We had a lovely meal there. We were very pleased. The same delicious Schnitzel. Weather permitting you can eat outside.

For me Figlmueler is hugely overrated, not even among the first 30 restaurants in Vienna. It postitoned itself as a place to be for schnitzel but it is more marketing than reality. Yes the schnitzel is big (but also very thin and rather dry) it covers the plate completely but that is about all. Nothing special, very touristy, more fast food than a restaurant. You won't find many locals here if at all. Queues are gigantic, mostly because of mentioned marketing reasons. I would recommend Plachutta.

Yes, essential to make reservations. A couple other options: Gasthaus Pfudl and Da Capo.
All these restaurants were in walking distance from our hotel. (Hotel Austria).

We were in Vienna 3 weeks ago and enjoyed the wiener schnitzel at Café Korb, Brandstätte 7-9 (not far from Stephanplatz) and Griechenbeisl, Fleischmarkt 11.

We did not bother making reservations and got a table at both within about 5 minutes.

During a visit a couple of years ago we also ate it at Café Eiles, Josefstadter Str. 2. They served it with cranberry sauce, along with the usual lemon wedge.

BTW, if you are not a big eater you can ask for a 1/2 portion. Or order one and share. I can never finish a whole one by myself

The schnitzel place I tried and quite enjoyed was Schnitzelwirt in Neubaugasse. Nice food but the schnitzel was so gigantic I could only eat half of it.

Cafe Eiles is my "traditional" cafe in Vienna - nice food but the goulash is quite small for my taste. Nearby is a slightly more expensive restaurant called Fromme Helene which I liked - booking recommended.

Another vote for Schnitzelwirt -- this place was recommended by Tina of the nearby K&T Boardinghouse who also suggested splitting one order. We try to get there on every trip to Vienna, share a schnitzel and two orders of potato salad. Highly affordable, no reservations.
