Vienna Public Transport (Wiener Linien) New Fares/Changes for 2026

These are significant changes that warrant attention going into 2026. More details below, but in a nutshell, the one way fare will increase to 3.20 Euro (3 Euro online/on the app). The 48 and 72-hour passes as well as the single ride senior discount ticket are discontinued. Penalties for riding without a ticket are increasing.

While these changes impact the pocketbook, it is clear that the Vienna public transportation system remains affordable, especially for those who live in the city and use the system daily (like me). The system remains easy to use, clean and safe.

From the article (more details in the link):

"New fare structure from 1 January 2026: Wiener Linien secures its extensive public transport services for the long term

The public transport network has grown significantly in recent years, with additional lines and mobility services making the public transport offering more comprehensive than ever before. In order to maintain this high standard in the future, Wiener Linien will be adjusting its fare structure on 1 January 2026. Even after the adjustment, Vienna's public transport system will remain inexpensive by European standards while offering the most efficient network.

Public transport is the backbone of mobility in Vienna. Every day, trams, buses and underground trains transport around 2.4 million people safely, reliably and in a climate-friendly manner to their destinations. In recent years, Vienna has invested heavily in the expansion of its public transport network: new lines, modernised stations, additional bus and tram services, as well as WienMobil bikes and cars, make Vienna's mobility offering stronger than ever before.

In order to maintain this high level in the future, Wiener Linien will adjust its fare structure on 1 January 2026. The price of the annual ticket has not been increased since 2012, while energy prices, wages and operating costs have risen sharply. With the new fare structure, fares will be adjusted fairly and moderately. In order to be able to plan even better in the future, Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna have decided to revalue fares annually from 1 January 2027. This brings Wiener Linien into line with VOR and ร–BB."

The best ticket for tourists is (and will be) the 7-Days-Vienna pass. All tickets are cheaper if you buy them online (web shop or mobile phone app) instead from a counter or ticket vending machine.

Train tickets will also rise about 3% starting with the 2026 time table.

Thank you Emily. I bookmarked the link for future use. Vienna public transportation was very easy to use with the 7-day pass a couple years ago.

Emily, I know how much time and effort it takes to help those here stay on top of whats going on in Vienna, so I admire you for doing it for us. You are our one and only Austrian local and you are incrediably helpful. Thank you.

I got to the "surcharges" (clever word) and spit out my coffee .... "Travelling without a valid ticket is not a trivial offence. To make the system fairer, the surcharge is being increased. From 1 January, the surcharge will be โ‚ฌ135 for immediate payment and โ‚ฌ145 for payment by payment slip." I remember a post last year where the Hungarians were called thieves for charging a $30 fine for not validating a $1.29 ticket. WOW!! BUT the purpose is for tourists to subsidize the locals and thatโ€™s fair.

For tourists the 7-day digital pass is $30. I would suspect that the average tourist says 3.5 days so tourism is about $8.60 a day. Not horrible. Again, the tourists are tolerated to subsidize the locals ... as it should be.

Mr. E- Given that the public transportation system in Vienna is an honor system (no gates/turnstiles to enter), many locals take advantage of the situation. Austrians are also pretty famous for making and sticking to rules. Iโ€™m certain that the penalty for abusing the system is aimed at naughty locals, not tourists.

According to the numbers published every year for public transport in Vienna, about 3.5% of the passengers are fare dodgers. In 2024 about 125000 people were caught without a ticket, making more than โ‚ฌ12 million in fines.

Emily I have to laugh here from time to time. I'll see a group of well dressed middle aged Hungarian women going down the stairs, see the spot inspection at the bottom and turn around, and go back up. But its not super common.

But at least once a month, I see a tourist or group of tourists getting nabbed for not validating their tickets. Can't recall when I last saw a local being caught without a ticket. Just a different market than Vienna. The fines pay so I can ride free ๐Ÿ˜€

My stays in Vienna usually run from 8 to 15 days. I do get the 7 day pass from the ticket machine, no app. Having the pass is very convenient.

When that expires, I get another one. Very true, the system is based on the honor system. This summer's stay I noticed the controllers seem to appear more than usual...good ! There have been times during the entire week's stay the controller showed up once
