We are planning our trip a bit late, but I do have a few questions.
We will be landing in Munich the previous week, and will depart and explore Salzburg, Hallstatt, etc along the way.
Best area to stay that has the local feel, but walkable to city center.
Recommended day trips?

Any hotel within or close to the ring (Tram lines 1 & 2) will be convenient for traveling about Vienna and walking to the city center. Not sure what a local feel is to you. You will be in a very urban city of 2 million where people live, work, shop and play just about everywhere. If you like US chains, the Marriott Vienna or Hilton Vienna Plaza are options on opposite sides of the city center.
I recall that you are going to visit Oktoberfest in Munich. I suggest a visit to Schweizerhaus in Prater for a Viennese take on a beer garden. And if possible, ride the Ferris Wheel at sunset.
