My husband and I will be in Vienna for 3 nights in September and are looking for restaurant recommendations. Does anyone have any places that are a "must go to" to recommend? Thank you!
Go to Reinthalers Beisl,a very traditional restaurant close to St Stephens Cathedral, full of local's and Fugimuller for Weiner Schnitzel, very famous for the size of the Schnitzel.

If you have a nice evening, a trip to the Heurigen is an essential part of the Vienna experience. RS Guidebooks provides the basic information. Go to Nussdorf or Grinzing and find one that appeals to you. Weingut Meyer at the Beethoven Haus in Heiligenstadt is lovely but is a subway ride and then a bus ride from the inner city. The Heurigen can be magical on a fall evening. Have fun!
For a nice break from heavy meats, Turkish restaurants are plentiful in Vienna and are of good quality. Emily from Vienna would probably have good suggestions. I was happy with Kebab Haus, but I'm not sure how the locals view it.
@MrsEB. The schnitzel at Figlmüller is indeed delicious, top quality and well prepared. We spent a month near Vienna 2 years ago and my husband almost completed his goal of "a schnitzel a day keeps the doctor away". According to him, Figlmüller was one of his best and the standard to which he measured the others.
We were in Vienna in late October/early November 2015 and had nothing but great food. With that said, our favorites were Fromme Helene and Marienhof, both on Josefstadter Strasse. Their menus were very similar - with a wide choice of traditional Austrian dishes and excellent wines and desserts.
Schnitzel at Schnitzelwirt Schmidt on Neubaugasse. Backhendl and a Budvar at the Schwiezerhaus in the Prater.
Lots of places to a great schnitzl. Personally I wouldn't stand in line for a gigantic one, but that's just me. ;-)
My favorite heuriger is Hendl Haselbrunner in the leafy 19th. Excellent food and nice garden. Tour bus free.
Rebhuhn is a neat little local joint in the 9th. Just off the ring at a stop for the D tram (across the street from the Freud museum).
Plachutta is very good traditional fare--several outlets in the city.
Wild on Radetskyplatz (1030, close to the Hundertwasserhaus) is also good and out of the tourist zone.
Schweitzerhaus in the Prater for pork shoulder and unpasteurized Budwar. Awesomely old school. (Should still be able to sit outside in Sept.)
For fish, Umar on the Naschmarkt.
Small plates at Ignazio (a Spanish market-wine bar outfit run by a super nice Galacian guy), on Salztorbruckegasse (between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring) is a nice place for a quick bite.
The Wurstelstand at the Albertinaplatz is pretty great too. :-)
It has been 10 years but I agree with a Heurigen wine evening in that district areas time allowing. We had two, one was a kitschy tourist thing and one we stumbled into was local (sorry don"t remember the names). The kitschy tourist place was big and had live Hungarian violin style music (looking for tips) and a Brotseit. At the smaller local place there was no live music, but the food available was a pay for what you want buffet with Braten, Wurst and other good stuff with much better food and personally I liked the "local" atmosphere better too (no tourists). If you do it try to find a place the locals go to. The other option is the tourist route and enjoy the music. After a few glasses of Heurigen wine it becomes much easier. We used the bus and tram transportation in Vienna a lot. Drove there and basically parked the car.
I second the recommendation for the Schweitzerhaus in the Prater park. Stroll through this old fashion park full of rides until you get to the Schweitzerhaus biergarten in the middle. We enjoyed sharing an enormous pork knuckle and a Budvar that had the creamiest stick to your upper lip head on it that I'd ever seen. People were also sharing big plates of spiral cut radishes. Great biergarten, I'm really glad we went.
Here's my list:
Steirereck - the 9th best restaurant in the world. Probably impossible to get a table at this point, so reserve a table for breakfast at the co-located Meierei. Exquisite and won't totally blow your budget. https://www.steirereck.at/en/meierei/
Mayer am Nussberg - wine and nibbles in the vineyards with an outstanding view. Yes, please. Take the 38A bus from Heiligenstadt to Kahlenberg and then walk down the hill on a well maintained path. Walk the rest of the way down following the signs "stadtwanderweg 1" to Schuebel Auer, my favorite heuriger, in Nussdorf. http://www.mayeramnussberg.at/en/home.html; http://www.schuebel-auer.at/; https://www.wien.gv.at/umwelt/wald/freizeit/wandern/wege/wanderweg1.html
Vollpension - For cake and coffee. http://www.vollpension.wien/
Palmenhaus - For a later afternoon glass of wine and/or late lunch. Great good and excellent atmosphere. http://www.palmenhaus.at/
Glacis Beisl - All around fab choice for dinner. http://glacisbeisl.at/info/
I forgot to add Glacis Beisl as suggested,we really enjoyed our dinner there.

We schnitzeled our way through Germany and Austria last year, and Figlmuller was definitely the best. We ordered one veal and one white turkey meat - both were excellent. Don't forget the tasty desserts in Vienna, too!
