Vienna Japanese Garden

I was watching the annual Vienna New Year Concert again a few minutes ago and saw some very attractive video of a Japanese garden which was said to be at the Volksgarten. I'd like to know a few things about that, if I may, please.

Is the Volksgarten as its name sounds, open to the public and a large garden along the lines of the English Garden in Munich or Hyde Park in London? Is it as large, and is it nice there?

Is the Japanese Garden as nice as it seems in the video, or is it a bit of Hollywood magic? Is it a major part of the park or off in a corner?

I saw the cherry blossom. When is cherry blossom time in Vienna?

Thanks in advance....

The Japanese garden in Vienna is a comparably small park in the 19th city borough. Its offical name is "Setagayapark".
https://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/en/ (Enter Setagayapark as search term.)
You can find several videos on YouTube.

The "Volksgarten" (people's garden) is a park in the 1st city borough, open to the public, but bearing a strict geometric layout, i.e. not comparable to e.g. Hyde Park. If you want to go to a park in that style the "Stadtpark" (city park), the "Donaupark" (Danube park), or the "Kur-und Erholungspark Laaer Berg" (mountain Laa recreation park) would be the right choice. (Parks listed by increasing area.)

The name of Volksgarten has nothing to do whether it is open to the public or not.

During the imperial time of Austria (up until 1918) the population was divided in an upper class and a lower class. Therefore you will still find some institutions doubled for the respective class.

Hofoper (now Staatsoper, royal opera) vs. Volksoper (people's opera)
Burgtheater (royal theater) vs. Volkstheater (people's theater)
Burggarten (royal garden) vs. Volksgarten (people's garden)

Thanks, wmt1.

I think the TV announcer for the show must have been given the wrong information. I hope to see all those parks.... I don't know when to go for the cherry blossom.

I am a bit of a cherry blossom fanatic. I just watched this portion of the concert and, yes, the announcer gets it wrong. That is Setagaya Park in the 19th district. I go there every year for the blossoms. Last year, I went on April 10 which was peak blossom time. Setagaya Park is tiny, very tiny, and can be explored in about 5 minutes, unless you want to want to linger for photos or lunch. The park is as lovely as it looks on screen.

If you like cherry blossoms as I do, there is also a stand of ornamental cherry trees in the corner of the Stadtpark closest to Wien Mitte/Landstrasse. For other Japanese gardens, there is a small one at Schonbrunn just by the zoo entrance and small one as well at Kurpark Oberlaa (one of the most fantastic gardens of all and massive).

The Volksgarten, however, is famous for its roses. Huge and fragrant and a real centerpiece of this garden. For roses, June is the best time. Follow your nose.

Thanks so much, Emily.

Around the 10th of April is a couple of weeks too early for me - both because I have to be in England on the 21st and don't want to split the journey, and because I will be driving my car and don't want to worry about chains and snow tyres. In England we don't need either. hmmph

Then come for the roses at Volksgarten in June.

Otherwise, mid-April is also a lovely time to come and see the apricot trees in blossom in the Wachau.

I hope Nigel won't mind another floral related question for Emily......... When is tulip time there please? We're debating the merits of various seasons you see. Thanks.

There are small beds of tulips in pretty much every park. Timing depends on weather but the window would be last week of March to mid April. But, Vienna is not a tulip town, in my opinion. Excellent wisteria and daffodil displays instead. But the best is the lilacs.

Tulips are early. Mine are already coming up here in the PNW. March and April are probably going to be the best. Later than that you'll only have the very late ones.
