Vienna - Is there enough to see & do in a 1 week stay?

A week can be a waste of time and money, or it can 'barely scratches the surface'. Depends entirely on your interests. I spent 3 days in Vienna visiting the Kunsthistorisches, the Albertina, and the Belvedere. I also visited Saint Stephen's Cathedral and several 'The Third Man' locations, including the Ferris Wheel. Three days were perfect for my agenda. Only you can decide what floats your boat and what doesn't.

You haven't given us much to go on here about your interests. Great Museums. Great Art. Great Music. Great Food. What do you and your wife like to do?

Have you spent a week or more on vacation in any other large cities?

I agree with the perspective that a week may barely scratch the surface in Vienna. For me, Vienna has an incredible diversity of architecture, museums, the arts, gardens and food. Certainly as much as New York, London or Paris--cities that can hardly be fully experienced in a week. Additionally, if you wait to go until December you will also have the Christmas Markets to visit.

To add a bit of context and more details:
1) my wife and I love museums, opera’s and general site seeing
2) we love spending time in restaurants and enjoying food
3) yes we have stayed a week or more in other European cities ie) Rome, Florence, Naples, Paris, Nice, Spain costa del sol, Portugal Algarve

We only have a week and will be doing research but thought to start on this forum for a head start

For those who travelled here before , is it a walking city ? Do you recommend any day trips from Vienna by train ( as I will not have a car)
Is it best to visit at Christmas time or Sept/Oct

Vienna, for the most part, is very walkable. The public transportation is spectacular, and will take you to outer areas of town ,quickly and easily . While there are many choices for day trips , two of my favorites are Klosterneuburg Abbey ,North of the city in Lower Austria , and Baden bei Wien , South of the city . Both are about 45 minutes from the center of town. I would prefer September or October ( I am back there this coming October for two weeks , my tenth such visit )

The answer to your question is yes.

Sept/Oct will be very, very different experiences from December, so choose wisely. Aside from the obvious difference in weather, Sept/Oct can be used for outdoor experiences, like hikes in the Wienerwald/Kahlenberg and strolls through vineyards with a glass of wine in your hand. There are also many festivals happening in Vienna in Sept/Oct like the Erntedanke (Harvest) Festival and Vienna's version of Oktoberfest. December, of course, is a magical time with over 20 Christmas markets in the city. It is glorious as well to wander the city center and see the light displays. Which is better? Both are great and it is totally subjective.

If you are interested in museums and Opera, as you wrote above, I can think of no better place in Europe than Vienna. There are many and some will take half a day.

You could also consider a day trip to Bratislava, which is easy to do. If you come in December, there is a great Christmas market there. Another great day trip is the Wachau, which is perfect in Sept/Oct.

If you go and it everything to you that you dreamed it would be, then yes. If it turns out to rub you the wrong way, and that can happen to good, smart and well traveled people, then its way too much.

If its your only destination in Europe, then with the cost of getting there and back, make it work and find enjoyment at all cost.

If you are stopping in a second city like Prague or Budapest and you have cut the second to 3 days so you can have a week in Vienna, then a week may be too long.

If you are looking at day trips to use time not because they facinate you, then it may be too long.

Budget might play into it as well. It's a bit pricy.

As Emily pointed out a major portion of Vienna's tourist sights are a modern reconstruction. Most go, some multiple times, and never realize it.

It took me a while to warm up to the city, but I enjoy now and living only a few hours away I never turn down an opportunity to visit. And I could spend a week.

It depends on what type of traveller you are, what your interests are.

For reference, I’m particularly interested in art museums, churches, historic architecture, and walking around endlessly. I don’t need to go into every last attraction.

For me, five full days was about right. I went into St. Stephen’s, the Opera, St. Charles Church, St. Peter’s Church, the Albertina, Schönbrunn, the Belvedere, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Academy of Fine Arts. I also did an organized walking tour and spent a lot of time just walking around the city.

I hope this is a useful reference point for planning your trip.

With your interests I think you will really like a week in Vienna. We’ve spent several one week times there and in the past 10 years we’ve spent 3 one month periods in Vienna. There is so much to do and see. We’ve been there in the summer, late fall and winter and Vienna is well suited for all of them.

Thank you thank you for everyone’s response. This information is so valuable and I have enough to make a decision with my wife, which is we will definitely go but now it’s between Sept/Oct or December.

We're going in early December and our heads are spinning from all there is to do.
If you are able to get around on foot it seems lie you can have a great time in a week.
We've been watching Youtube videos and have picked up some good suggestions on what to do.
Must check out the video that one traveller suggested.
Have Friday-Monday open at the moment and think we might concentrate on things outside of District 1.

Well the best Christmas markets are outside of the First District as are many major sights. Vienna is compact and easy to get around.
