Vienna in late July or early August

Planning a week-long stay in Vienna this summer with my 85 year-old mom to celebrate the end of my cancer treatments. We've visited Vienna before -- but during the winter -- and loved it so we want to go back during better weather. Not sure how much energy I'll have following chemo and radiation, and mom tends to tire quickly, so our main goal is to stroll around the neighborhoods, take in a museum or an outdoor concert in a park each day, and spend lots of time in cafes eating wonderful tortes, sipping coffee and enjoying the Viennese lifestyle.

My question is: Are there any national holidays or large events that will take place in the end of July or early August that we need to plan around? Not that we'd change our dates, but it's nice to know in advance that stores/transpo might not be open or operating while we are in the city. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Being in Vienna at that time you might find depending on the hotel the rates at their cheapest. This is the time period when it is seen as "slow." where in the US it is seen as peak season. As such the hotel rates go down. The bad part at this time is that the heat could get uncomfortable, or even oppressive, if you don't like summer heat. I have been to Vienna during these days late July/early August...it's a trade-off.

Thanks for all the great advice, both on this thread and in private messages. Yes, we are prepared for warm weather -- we live in the Atlanta, Georgia area, so warm July/August temps are the norm for us. Thanks again, everyone.
