Vienna Hotels/Restaurants

We hope to spend December 23-30 in Vienna and would appreciate suggestions for lodging and restaurants.

We visited Vienna in 2018 and stayed near the train depot but the location wasn't that great. We saw many museums and other attractions while there but it was during the summer. Very hot, crowded. I realize it will likely be busy because of the Christmas holiday but would appreciate suggestions.

Many thanks

In the past, we always stayed at the Bristol, but it is currently undergoing renovation. Last month, we stayed at the Boutique Das Tyrol and it was really lovely. A quick ten minute walk to the city centre and trams. Not sure about restaurants (was unimpressed with the couple we tried).

Which ones? What kind of cuisine you were looking for?

Hotel Altstadt would be my lodging recommendation. Hotel Imperial is also great, and it's now a Marriott property.

We were recommended a restaurant close to the hotel (in garden setting), but didn’t have a reservation, so no go. We ended up at Cafe Sperl. The food was barely edible, the waitress indifferent, but then demanded a tip. We had a decent meal at the Naschmarket, but honestly, the weather was hot and by the end of the day, could not be bothered seeking out a particular restaurant . The Aussie dollar is half that of the Euro and I refused to pay $55 (Aust) for a veal schnitty, that I can get for $25 (with chips and salad) at my local pub. Did have a hamburger at the Aussie pub (which we accidently came across) and it was pretty good.

nellfuller - Sorry you had that experience. I have been to Sperl many times and I think they have the best apfelstrudel. I've never eaten anything but sweets and coffee there. If you do come back, then I'd be happy to make recommendations.

Thank you Emily. Not sure what happened this trip as I loved the food in Vienna on previous trips. I think the hot, muggy weather did me in and the rather unpleasant experience at Demels. Mind you, I love their plum and pancake dish and their sachet torte. I wonder if a lot of the smaller cafes closed during Covid and never reopened. But, if I ever return to Vienna, I will be sure to seek out your recommendations

Emily,
Did you make hotel recommendations and I missed them?
Our budget is around €200-300/night? We will also be wanting convenient walking to city center and sights since we will only be in town 2-3 nights the week before OP.
Thank you!

Emily,
Yes!
We will be there Dec 15-18 or 19th. We haven't put plans in place. We have only booked flights so far.

Wilde from Texas, I have some exciting options for you. I looked at booking.com and considered your budget, dates and overall location (as well as any personal experiences I have).

Here are seven suggestions:

Small Luxury Hotel Altstadt Vienna - a really sweet hotel in the exceptionally desirable 7th district of Vienna. Right next to probably the most beautiful church square in Vienna (which also includes the fabulous Erich and Ulrich restaurants), this hotel is very close to Spittelberg the best Christmas market in Vienna.

Singerstrasse 21-25 Aparthotel - I actually stayed here for a month when I moved to Vienna. The location couldn't be better (just look at Google). This room has a small kitchenette, which might be nice. Modern and high quality.

Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection - I have had guests stay here more times than I can count. The hotel recently underwent an huge renovation and the look is modern in a historical building. Breakfast is fantastic. Also an indoor swimming pool which is rare. Location is great, right next to Rennweg, so easy access to the S7 airport train and the markets of Karlsplatz (the other best market) and Belvedere.

Boutique Hotel Das Tigra - I am recommending this hotel because of the location. It is prime. Sandwiched between the third best markets of Freyung/Am Hof, you are right in the heart of the action.

Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth - Also, again, recommending this quaint hotel based on location and reviews. Really great choice I think.

Hotel Gilbert - This is a newer hotel, but very popular. It is squeezed between the funky market at the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) and the uber-fabulous Spittelberg. I think this is a great choice too.

Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen Vienna - I have had guests stay here many times. Modern rooms, great breakfast, classic facade. Walking distance to the Ring, Belvedere in the backyard, Karlsplatz market just down the street. S7 airport train one block away.

I hope this helps!

Emily 🐈🐈!

Those are awesome suggestions! Thank you! I will have to get on tonight and look at them to see which one looks best and which one is on my credit card list (I can use card points for hotels booked through the card) so this will be lovely.

You are the best. I used many of your suggestions this time last year, if I remember correctly for Germany. I may be wrong, but I am a 4 cat owner so I remember your name with the cats at the end. ha! I am trying to decide more days here or more days in Salzburg. We fly out of Munich on Dec 25th so we need to be on a train headed for Munich the 24th.

Thank you again!
