Vienna day trips in December

Hi!
I'm planning our visit to Vienna in mid-December. We have 7 full days, and we prefer a slower, deeper pace. I've filled the days with things to do in and around the city, but am wondering about day trip options.

I see Melk and the abbey, but am thinking that may be better saved for a future, spring-time trip when we could do the boat trip.

And I see Halstatt, but without spending a night there, am concerned about the crowds. And also, may be better for spring/fall when we can enjoy the outdoors more.

That leaves Bratislava. Which I think I may just leave as a "we're bored, let's go somewhere else for a day" option if we feel like it.

Curious if anyone thinks I'm incorrectly crossing off any of these options, or if there is another I should consider.

I'm just starting my research into a Vienna trip and am considering time in Budapest.
I've seen bus tours as day trips.
You may be too late for wine tours, though those day trips looked nice for a day in the countryside.

Have a great trip!

In that case I would recommend going by train. Traveling from Vienna to Budapest on the RailJet is easy, comfortable and fast (2:40 hours) with the opportunity to have a nap. If you take an early train to Budapest and a late one back to Vienna, you can enjoy a full day visiting Budapest. Be sure to spend €3 for a seat reservation.
