Vienna Classical Music Concerts

Hi everyone,

We will be in Vienna in late July. Sadly, I know that the opera will be on break (and the Spanish Riding School :( ) but we would like to take in one or two concerts. Looks like there are a lot available, and perhaps some may be more touristy than others. I'm not opposed to something touristy with costumes etc., but want to choose wisely also. Any recommendations for music/theater/opera at end of July? And...any way to see the Lipizzaners in July, even them just hanging out in their stalls or something similar?

Thanks!

The Wiener Mozart Orchester does play at The Musikverein in July , and although in costume , the players are first rate and the selections are appropriate and sweet . Also hearing anything in The Musikverein , arguably , one of the world's greatest concert halls is alone worth a visit . While many Viennese musicians are off playing in various summer festivals , the city has a large contingent of free lance musicians who still have to make a living in summer . There won't be any Mahler or Brahms , but you'll still have a good time

Also look at the small local churches to see if any are having an evening concert - I've been to a few of these, in both Vienna and elsewhere and they are always very enjoyable. They usually have anywhere from 3 to 5 musicians and they play classical music which sounds amazing in the small churches. Plus they are non-touristy and not very expensive. One that I've been in to Vienna and loved is at St. Anne's church - you can find them online and look for the actual church/concert website if possible as opposed to a ticket agency.

If you want to attend an exceptional opera performance, I can suggest Aïda presented open-air in a Roman quarry.
There are combo-tickets available, i.e., including bus transfers to the location and back to Vienna. The only risk is the weather sometimes.

For the very first time there will be an opera performance (during the first three weeks of July) in the garden of Belvedere palace.

Hi.
I too will be enjoying Vienna and plan to enjoy some wonderful classical music. I have tickets for a ballet at the Vienna State Opera House.

I'd like to hear more. The Golden Hall in the Musicverein is top of my list. I do avoid "touristy" options, and do not know how to respectfully ask this question...but with complete innocence, I wonder if the Mozart and Vivaldi and the Vienna Mozart Orchestra concerts in costume at the Musicverein are as wonderful and authentic as one would expect at such a venue.
Suggestions for great classical music in early October would be most appreciated.

As you might sense, I mistakenly attended a "concert" elsewhere that was more show than masterful music.
Thanks very much.

The Musikverein is worth seeing whatever you have to endure to be in there. But, if possible, I would go for a performance that is more formally classical, not the costumed ones.
