Vienna city transportation question

When we visit Vienna next month for 2+ weeks, arriving on a Monday, we know we will buy 7 days worth of transportation to get us started. We already had accounts from a previous trip. What I’m finding harder to comprehend this time is the new Core ticket restriction descriptions listing station names only. So I googled and found the old 100, now Core, type of map which is a great visual for me.

I’m curious about the 111 designation areas surrounding the Core 100 on the old map. Will they be included in the 7 day ticket or will we have to buy an extension? Just occasionally will we want to go beyond the Core. When we take day trips further we’ll use our convenient Meidling station, a 5-10 minute walk from our apartment.

A transportation pass for Vienna will cover public transportation in all areas within the Vienna city limits, except the CAT (City Airport Train) and Westbahn trains. As far as I can tell from this map (which is very hard to read) areas with 111 are within Vienna city limits.

What I’m finding harder to comprehend this time is the new Core ticket restriction descriptions listing station names only.

As described on their website, all tickets issued by Wiener Linien (Vienna Public Transport) are valid for what is now called the core zone (long ago zones 100 & 111). I could not see station names used for describing the limits of the core zone.

The zone numbering system has been abandoned years ago. Trips to a destination outside of the core zone are paid by distance. If you buy such a ticket, don't forget to mention that you have already a ticket for the core zone, i.e., the part inside the core zone will not be used for calculating the price.

This is the current map of the core zone:

(This map shows the day service; there is another map for the late night service.)

Thank you both for this helpful information. I see that the Core is more extensive than I thought it would be. I’ll familiarize myself with more end route towns and let the booking app help me plan our journeys knowing when we can go and when we’ll have to buy an extension ticket.

Mona, except for travel to the airport, I can probably count on one hand the number of times in 16 years living here that I’ve needed to supplement a Vienna ticket. Where are you going that has made you worry about this issue?

Emily, Perchtoldsdorf, our first Austrian home exchange. I see that it is kind of off the map from the Liesing station we drove to. No car this time. I know there are buses that connect Liesing to Perchtoldsdorf so we will probably need to buy a separate bus ticket.
