Vienna Christmas Markets 2026 - A Local's Take

Christmas Markets in Vienna will begin opening this year on Nov. 6 - a little more than two months from now. I'm setting up this thread now where I will share my reviews and insights.

As a first observation, the Christmas Market at Belvedere will not take place this year due to renovation works. A new Christmas Market by the same management company will take place for the first time at Schwarzenbergplatz in front of the large fountain. Also notably, the Christmas Market at Maria-Theresien-Platz is back this year after a hiatus last year due to construction.

Thanks for this update. I was planning to visit the Belvedere to see the palace in the evening lights. Looking forward to 5 days and nights in Vienna this December.

My friend and I are visiting Vienna for the Christmas markets. We are both 70 year old women in good shape and like to walk. Can you recommend some hotels in city center that would be close to the Schonbrunn Christmas market? We need a hotel that has twin beds as we would like to share a room but have separate beds.

Is it easy to walk (within a mile) to other Christmas markets from the Schonbrunn market or do we need to depend on public transportation or uber?

Sharon,

Please take a look at Google Maps or a Vienna Guidebook. Schonbrunn was the summer palace and is well away from the city center. Easy to access it and almost anywhere else in Vienna via public transportation. Vienna has, of course, expanded and Schonbrunn is now surrounded by the city.

Many hotels offer rooms with twin beds. For example, the Hilton DoubleTree located about 10-15 minute walk from Schonbrunn has double rooms.

If I may suggest, take a look at Emily's post regarding last year's Christmas Markets. My plan is to visit 10 of Vienna's markets when I am there in December. Many of these markets are well with a mile of one another.

Do not consider walking or using Uber for getting around in Vienna. Use public transport as everybody, it is easy to use and available everywhere.

I would choose a hotel somewhat closer to the city center as being near to Schönbrunn.
