Vienna Christmas 2026

Hello everyone :) need some advice on where to stay in Vienna from 24-29 Dec. I understand that that's exactly when all the shop and supermarket closures occur, but these are our dates!

Am trying to decide between staying at Habyt Vienna (in Leopoldstadt, about 10-12min walk to Praterstern station) and Citadines Danube in Donaustadt (directly outside Kagran U-bahn).

For similar pricing, both rooms include kitchenettes, but only citadines includes breakfast as well.

My concern with citadines is that it's really far out even though well connected by train. However reviews online talk about its convenience and that there's supermarkets and shops around.

Was considering Habyt as technically, it would be possible to walk to the old town even though it would be a long walk etc. But it's a quiet, residential neighbourhood and am not too familiar with supermarket or food options there.

Am looking forward to walking around and exploring on foot too - would that mean Habyt in Leopoldstadt is going to be better? So lost. Thank you for any advice!

I suspect there will be enough open to enjoy the holdiay just fine. Especially inside the Ringstraße; so, especially with your dates thats where I would stay. Either inside or righ up against it.

Book now for meals on the 24th, 25th and 26th. Or at least confirm what is open. Plenty I bet but you gotta know which so you dont spend your holiday searching. Then look for the things that stay open 365 days a year. In Vienna, not sure, but, where I live, in Budapest that means the Bathhouses for instance. Really not much trouble with restaurants here either, and I presume Vienna is similar. Oh, also check the metro hours during the holidays. Cause those two hotels you listed will keep you in the underground a lot.

To be honest, neither of these options is in a neighborhood of beauty or interest. The Citadines is a bit more of an upscale area as a lot of UN families live around there. The Citadines is also in the largest shopping mall in Vienna, which a very good food court and three grocery stores nearby. The neighborhood around Habyt is working class.

That said, you want a location with good public transportation options so that you can get to a part of the city where you do want to walk. The Citadines location is directly in front of the U1 subway line, which will take you to the city center in just a few minutes (like less than 10 minutes). I would go with Citadines on location alone.

Everything will be closed on Dec. 24, 25 and 26. If you are arriving by air, then definitely stock up at the grocery store at the airport which will be open. Make reservations NOW for meals on those days.
