Vienna but stay Durnstein?

Would it make sense if we had a car to sleep in Durnstein while exploring Vienna? We arrive to Vienna at 8 am on sleeper train plan for stallions and in city residences then to sleep in Durnstein. Return to palace and Vienna next day then sleep Durnstein leave for Salzburg. My family stayed there in the 80s and without staying two nights it seems too rushed, I’d rather stay in same hotel than stay in the city. I realize we will spend time back and forth. Has anyone ever done this?

We spent a number of nights in Vienna on our honeymoon, yonks ago, visiting Durnstein as well. If you are not spending any time in Krems or Melk, or much time in Durnstein itself, consider Grinzing or Klosterneuburg on the outskirts of Vienna. Leave the car where you sleep, public transport into the city. As with any busy city, no fun getting in and out with a car.

Driving from Dürnstein to Vienna (and vice versa) is about 1:30 hours, i.e. for going back and forth during one day it will cost you 3 hours of your time.

I really don't think that makes sense. Just get some sites in Vienna out of the way on your arrival day, head to Duernstein and then just stay there for the second day, exploring the Wachau with your car.

If you want to be out of Vienna, the Klosterneuburg suggestion above works.

If you want to be in town but hassle a little less with the city core, you can stay at one of the business hotels down by the river. Hilton Vienna Waterfront or such. They are just out of the center, but there's public transportation, and they have parking. Or across the river on the Ubahn line as well.
