Vienna Boys Choir

Can anyone provide a review/report of of their experience seeing the Vienna Boys Choir in concert? It looks like I have the option when I’m there in June to see a Friday evening concert. Just wondering what those who have done it have to say. Is this a ‘don’t miss’ experience?

Years ago - Mass in the Homburg (edit - how is that for an auto-correct! I changed it once, missed that it went back to its preference. Obviously, "Hofburg" was intended.) Continuing as intended: Mass in the Hofburg Chapel was a definite highlight. I remember it as if yesterday when it fact it was decades ago. (Choir serves as musicians for the Sunday Roman Catholic church service. Church service - not a concert setting.)

Regular tour concerts I've caught in Chicago - very fine performances but obviously missing the setting of the Hofburg Chapel. There is an annual US tour - generally around Thanksgiving - Christmas.

I suppose "don't miss" depends on your interest in choral singing. You could check to see if a US venue is available to you when at home if you aren't certain you wish to forgo enjoying another activity while in Vienna.

Thanks for the insight. This would not be in the chapel. It’s in the MuTH theater. I don’t think it would interfere with any other activities, it’s at 5 PM on a Friday night so we can easily get dinner after the concert and presumably would be done with afternoon activities by then. I hadn’t really thought about looking into a US venue, thinking of it more as a vacation, memory opportunity.

I see that the VBC is singing for three Fridays in June. If it is the 13th that you will be here, then I would much prefer this event - https://www.wienerphilharmoniker.at/en/summernightconcert - you would be lucky to have planned your trip to be a part of this special once a year concert by the famous Vienna Philharmonic.

If your dates are the 6th, then I would prefer Carmen at the Opera. If the 20th, then maybe the VBC instead of a a Wagner Opera. For dinner consider Skopik & Lohn, Sperling im Augarten or Altenberg for a great meal or Monte Ofelio for drinks.

The VBC are a Viennese institution, but not really my jam.

Thanks for the additional options. We would be there on the 20th. We are still undecided & are looking at Mozart concert opportunities in Salzburg in the following days. Probably one or the other not both.

Well it does come down to what you like. If it were me, I’d be buying the ticket. But I happen to love the vocal quality of boys’ unchanged voices. The venue is really good acoustically although definitely not a gorgeous historic building. In concert, they do a mix of classical, folk, and more modern music. I would also check to see if it’s more than just one of the four @ 25 member choirs (that is what tours). If it is 2 or more of the choirs, it would be glorious. (If you like that sort of thing.)

Thanks for the idea of trying to determine the size of the choir. I hadn’t given that much consideration and I’m not sure how to do it, but I understand the point.
