Hi, can anyone recommend a pension in an art nouveau building in/near the Old Town? Pension Riedl doesn't get very good reviews and the Hotel Bristol is too expensive. Thanks.
Notwithstanding your rejection of these two hotels on practical considerations , neither of these places could even remotely be considered " Art Nouveau " either on the exterior , or interior design , The exteriors of both buildings are notably of Renaissance and Baroque influence , built during the initial stages of Ringstrasse modernism . The interiors of Reidl are pleasant , but bland , and Bristol is , to put it kindly , a rather eclectic salad of Biedermeier , to Venetian , to twentieth century Hilton design . While Art Nouveau is a very broad umbrella , here are some photos to give you a rough idea of what constitutes Art Nouveau . There is , however , plenty of it to see in Vienna - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/342555115392895553/
How about the Ruby Sophie Hotel?
In German, the word for Art Nouveau is Jugendstil.
Of course , it is Jugendstil in German ! and it is Art Nouveau , not Art Noveau ( meaning Art without veal , in French ) .
The Ruby Sophie is an Art Nouveau exterior , the interiors are not . But it reminds me of the encounter between Bernard Shaw and his host , Basset Lowke in Northampton , England . Shaw had been invited to spend the night , and the bedroom had recently been redesigned in a late Secessionist style ( also an incarnation of Art Nouveau ) by Mackintosh ( a close friend of Klimt and Hoffmann ) When asked if he found the décor disturbing , Shaw replied " NO , I always sleep with my eyes closed "

The bus ride to/from the city center is 15 minutes.
I’ve corrected my spelling. I am a French speaker, so I blame my phone.
And Steven - enough with the ‘tude.
Thanks for the replies. Many years ago I stayed in a youth hostel in Madrid that was an Art Nouveau apartment with wonderful wooden and glass interior doors, etc. Thought maybe I could find something similar in a pension in Vienna. Thank you for the ideas.
