We will take train from Budapest to
1) Vienna on December 13 for 2 nights (Dec 13-Dec15)
2) train from Vienna to Salzburg for 3 nights (Dec 15-17)
Is it best to stay in Salzburg and day trip to Vienna or best to do the above?
Will take train from Salzburg to Zurich for the rest of our trip.

I would stay 3 nights in Vienna and 2 nights in Salzburg, as Vienna has about 10 times more to offer.
Salzburg and Vienna are too far away from each other for a day trip.

Most important: book your accomodation in time! Daytrips from Vienna to Salzburg are very ok, but one day is to short for a daytrip TO Vienna.
