Vienna and Construction Noise and Activity

Does anyone know if there is still a lot of construction happening in Vienna as there was a year ago? If so, where is it and where will it be this summer, August?

I would guess that there are hundreds of construction sites in Vienna. The only ones which are actually listed and published are road construction sites because of the detours and traffic limitations.

If you are looking at a certain area in Vienna ("Grätzel", aka small part of a city borough) I guess it will be possible to inquire at the local authorities as every construction site needs government approval.

A lot of construction is going on for the next 6 years along the route of a new underground metro line, which is currently being built.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Where were you in Vienna? Vienna is a city, so there’s always construction somewhere.

We will be seeng Vienna on foot, and would like to know if there are particular streets, town squares, or intersections that have major construction projects, so we can plan our walks to avoid them

If anyone has info on this, please let us know.

Even those of us in Vienna don’t know what is coming. As noted, the subway project is underground, so won’t bother you. No major construction zones spring to mind that would get in the way of walking on the sidewalk. Still curious about your previous experience.

The biggest construction area in the very center (1st city borough) is at "Neuer Markt" where an underground garage is built. The works will last for two years.

Nevertheless, at that square is "Kurkonditorei Oberlaa", where you get the best pastries and tarts in town (imho), as well as 20+ different handmade chocolates. Due to the construction area they moved from number 16 to 10 temporarily.

Hi,

Last May when I was in Vienna I did run into a construction site that was way out of the center area, it was at the end of a tram line and near the city boundary, saw the sign. Unless you intend to go out to these areas as I sometimes do in Vienna, it is not likely you will see these sites.

Going out to the outer areas is revealing, you see the various nationalities among the locals there. The times I've done it, taking the S-Bahn or tram, never did I see any sort of tourist at all, only local people carrying out their daily lives.

Thanks for your question, Emily. I was told by someone that a year or more ago, they were in a part of Vienna that was doing some building demolition, and the noise was very loud! So, I hope to wonder around taking routes that will avoid this kind of demolition or construction. If you have any further advise about peaceful walks in Vienna, I would love to hear it.

I always love it when someone was told something by someone about a place they don’t know and assume it is the truth!

Vienna is not a major construction zone. Relax and enjoy the city - hard hat free.

Peaceful walks are everywhere.

That's why I posted on this forum, Emily. To get a better picture of what is going on and to have more info at my disposal. And construction in a "city", as you reminded us Vienna is, would not be unusual.
