Vienna Accommodations

Please help with hotel choice in Vienna. I would like to be in the center (First District) near all attractions. I have looked at the Hotel Beethoven Wien, but I am not sure how close it is to the center. I have also looked at Hotel Graben and Konig Von Unguen. I would like to pay between 200 and 225 Euro. We will be in Vienna September 11 to September 15. I have looked at Pension Suzanne listed in Rick's book, but I don't believe there is air conditioning. Should that be a concern in September? Thank you for your help.

CMB: When we stayed at the Pension Suzanne a few years ago, the hotel staff provided room fans which were more than adequate for the early June weather. You will have to take a look at average temperatures for Vienna during the time you will be there. I suspect you will be out of the room during the day and only there in the evenings. The location of Pension Suzanne is superb. We were one block away from the Opera and right at the beginning of the pedestrian-only area. You are less than a block from bus, tram, and subway stations. You could not have a better location. Enjoy your trip!

When looking for hotels I use google maps. I search for hotels in the city then zoom in to the area I want stay. That way I see exactly where each property is located. I then google the property by name, check out its website & rates for dates and read the reviews on several websites. Once I choose a hotel I book directly with the hotel on their website.

While the First District is an obvious location, it is important to keep in mind that Vienna is very compact. Areas surrounding the first district are sometimes even more interesting with better dining options. Hotel Beethoven is in a great location, for example, just off of the Naschmarkt and across from many fabulous Jugendstil buildings. It also only takes about 5 minutes to walk from the hotel to the Ring.

I also plugged your dates into booking.com to see what came up. Das Tyrol and The Guesthouse, two outstanding hotels, are on the upper edge of your budget, but well worth considering. Hollmann Beletage is also an excellent deal and lovely. Of the hotels you have listed, I would choose Konig Von Ungarn.

As for the weather, it is a toss up. Fall might have already started and you might need a light jacket, or it might be sweltering. Who knows. At night, however, things will cool down no matter how hot it gets.

We stayed at Spiess and Spiess hotel in the 3rd district this past September. It was very nice, clean, quiet, comfortable, and had an excellent breakfast buffet. I chose it because of the location and the outstanding reviews (it was very highly rated on both booking.com and trip advisor). Location was perfect - very close (2 minutes walk) to the U3 Rochusgasse station, which is a 5-minute subway ride to Stephansplatz (city center). Also, there was a very nice Greek restaurant across the street. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit to Vienna. And Herr Spiess's scrambled eggs - mentioned many times by reviewers - were unadulterated but had a truly amazingly fresh taste.

We just returned from Vienna and had a very nice stay at Hotel Austria. Highly rated on trip advisor and blocks from Stephansplatz, but on a quite side street steps from a subway. The city center can be very crowded. Traditional old European hotel very clean and comfortable with modern bath rooms and excellent breakfast. Attentive staff and very affordable. No AC but had a fan. This is Europe after all

I stayed at the Classic Hotel Wien (https://www.classic-hotelwien.at/en/) and I was very happy with the hotel amenities and the location. It was air conditioned when I stayed there in July but their website says the air conditioning is 'seasonal' so not sure if that would apply in September or not. It's a very nice hotel so I would think if it's necessary in September it most likely will be available. You could call or email them if interested and ask them. I've recommended it to several people as I was quite impressed with it, especially for the cost which was quite reasonable. It gets excellent reviews on both booking.com and Trip Advisor.

cmb 3258, all three of the hotels you list are very well located. Hotel Graben and Konig v U. are more in the 'tourist zone' of the city. Hotel Beethoven is less than 10 min walk to the Kunsthistorishes Museum and the MQ. So it depends on your own preferences. One thing nice about being close to the Karlsplatz U-bahn station is that three of the lines go thru there (it's the only station with more than 2), which might be a slight advantage for transport from Hotel Beethoven depending on your plans.

But Emily is exactly right, the historic center of the city is quite compact and distances are short.

We stayed at the Classic Hotel Wien as well. What a wonderful place - the staff are top notch and the place is spotless! We loved the location. Right down the street is Cafe 3/4 Takt - and yes you can hear them pounding the wonderful schnitzel in the kitchen!

Husband and I will be in Vienna four nights end of September. I've bought and read Steve's book and read these comments. We've booked the Hotel Bristol. It looked historical and wonderful, but there is no mention of it. Any thoughts? Should we change??

The Bristol is a Vienna classic and has a fantastic location. Don't change.

LCM: Rick's books cannot possibly list every hotel, or even every "good" hotel, in a large city like Vienna. So, the fact that he does not mention a hotel means nothing.
