Upcoming Trip To Prague, Vienna and Budapest in April / May

Edited Title to show visiting all three cities.

We will be in Vienna in April for 5 days starting April 30th, after traveling from Boston to Prague (spending 6 days) then heading by train to Budapest for 6 days before flying back to Boston.

We will be taking a trip from Prague to Cesky Krumlov (staying over 1 day) then on to Vienna and hope to have our actual itinerary & flights firmed up next week.

I have been reading the individual RS books on the above cities, this thread for about 3 weeks and have enjoyed reading about the questions and recommendation various folks have made.

Now that our dates are firming up and I'll do the research to see the question has been answered already, I may need ask the knowledgeable travelers on Vienna some questions. Sometimes it will be to have something clarified or I found confusing as this is our 1st trip to these cities.

We have been to Italy several times and last year to Amsterdam & Belgium using Rick Steves books, podcasts, videos so somewhat familiar with using them for trip planning.

Thanking you in advance.....Gene

I made the same route last April--and added Bratislava. You'll love them all.

There are many watching this forum that are very experienced in travel to Prague, Vienna and Budapest. If you have any questions, speak up.

Two quick tips - 1) May 1 is a national holiday in Austria. Shops will be closed. Parades will be happening which may disrupt public transportation temporarily. Restaurants and sights will be open. More tourists than normal as it will be a holiday weekend. 2) To get from Cesky Krumlov to Vienna isn't very easy on public transportation. You will need to look into a shuttle service such as Bean Shuttle or CK Shuttle. It will be particularly important that you reserve this now as you will arrive on the cusp of a long holiday weekend.

Emily - shoveling out the last few hours from a old fashioned winter snow storm!

Thank you for the heads up on that information as I thought we could book a shuttle ride in Prague when we were ready to go to Cesky Krumlov and then would figure whether we wanted to leave for Vienna in either early AM or tour some more and leave late PM!

I will check out these 2 shuttle services

Is any one service considered better or more reliable? Rick Steves book mentions 2 other services, Sebastian Tours & Pension Lobo, has anyone experience with them?

Emily - I filled out the form for Bean Shuttle as it seemed to be the popular shuttle mentioned here and they got back to me for payment.

They appear to pick up at Hotel Akcent and they will pick up you elsewhere (Hotel Hastal, in my case) for a surcharge of 100 to 150 CZK extra? Is that the understanding of folks here?

The hotel you list (Hastal) is in Prague. I was encouraging you to take the shuttle from CK to Vienna. I don't think it is that hard to go from Prague to CK by train.

Emily - I wasn't clear in my posting as we do plan on taking a shuttle from CK to Vienna per your advice.

After we talked it over, read the various posts and trip reports, we decided to make the most of our time in CK, leave Prague early in the AM of our last day and take the shuttle for the 4 of us.

It seem to be the an option we liked, gave us most flexibility and got us in CK before noon?

So will you also take the shuttle from CK to Vienna?

Emily - yes and I am just now looking over two quotes from Bean Shuttle & one I did on the CK Shuttle site using their booking form.

Bean Shuttle for door to door from Prague to CK to Vienna for the dates of 29 April & 30 April. For each trip, I was quoted 950 CZK per person / 3,800 CZK for a party of 4. It look to be a share ride with others. A private car was 4,500 CZK and we would be the only 4 riders for the Vienna trip.

The CK Shuttle website, (once I figured which was legitimate according to FB discussions!) was 3,800 CZK for 4 and 4,100 CZK for the CK trip in a private car per trip, 4,500 for Vienna trip

Always an adventure for people who like to do this planning & thankfully we have this site and folks like you for checking these things out 😊
